Windows Vista snipping tool and Inkball on Windows XP

Unread post by Nokiamies »

I did not find any topics about this so though might as well write one.

It is possible to run certain Vista applications under XP using Alky for Applications http://www.alkyforapplications.net/

There is little to no documentation what you need to do to get it working so here is how:

For Prerequisites you need to install Windows Journal Viewer 1.5 which you may download from http://nokiamies.net/files/sw/journal.exe

Install Alky. During install it asks for vista install media and key. I recommend giving it as some programs wont work without valid licence. Key only need to be valid, not whitelisted. For sources folder you do not need whole install, just pidgenx.dll and pkeyconfig.xrm-ms from Windows Vista install media. After this install you need reboot system.

After that you need to get Vista files. If you do not have Vista installed but got either 32bit Home Premium or Ultimate install media you can open install.wim with 7-zip and browse around folders. You should find inkball on program files\microsoft games\inkball folder.
For snipping tool you need one from Windows Vista Beta 2 as one from RTM will fail with error message even after patching. It is located on system32\snippingtool.exe.

You will also need copy over MUI resources. Depending on your language it is short version of it. For example American English is EN-US and Finnish is FI-FI. MUI resource is named <program name>.exe.mui. Place it on language specific folder along with executable.
Next right click and select patch and run.

Now the program should run just fine. Make sure you keep manifest file along with executable. This is not working for all executable as some will rely on dependencies not available on XP.

Hoot Hoot!
(Too bad Finnish saying "Ei Pöllömpi allekirjoitus" (not too owl signature, which can also mean not too bad signature) does not translate too well to English. Well that shall do it)
