Windows Debugging Symbols Availability

Hardware and software mods, and programming stuff (overclocking, game mods, learning how to exit Vim because you're a web developer...)

Windows Debugging Symbols Availability

Unread post by win32 »

I am quite pleased with the availability of Windows debugging symbols. The MS Symbol Server even has them for build 6519's HAL. Windows symbol packages also seem to be the only source for debugging symbols for third-party drivers (as shipped with the OS, and I believe MS may compile some of them), as many hardware vendors do not release their symbols.

Downloadable packages for each RTM/SP (and even win2k SP4 UR1) of Windows NT from 5.0 to 6.0 are available here: http://web.archive.org/web/*/https://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols/packages/*

I also see symbol packages for 5048 and 7000 in there.

MS seems to have removed them.

You can find some newer packages up to Windows 10 TP here: http://web.archive.org/web/20150113072530/http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg463028.aspx

The rapid release distribution method of Windows 10 put an end to the packages, pointing people to the symbol server. Overall it is a better solution considering how unsuitable a Vista SP2 symbol will be to a file updated nearly 14 years later, when ESU ends.
