1 day to go!

https://endoflife.date/windows

OK, there's extended support for security updates for Win10 22H2 until October 2028, but other than that, Windows 10 is going the way of the deprecated and unsupported.

And the last Win11 (23H2) that can still boot on pre-SSE4.2 CPUs is going next month. I'm feeling old.

I will NEVER understand why people are so focused on WHATEVER "support" is supposed to mean.

I have to ask, are these so-focused types also the types that BUY "warranty plans" when they buy electronics?
'cause maybe THAT is the underlying notion here, being that I also NEVER buy "warranty plans".
And my electronics ALWAYS outlast, BY FAR, that "warranty period".

Besides being hot topic in some places and me wanting to break silence with something, it comes with eventual newer versions of programs stopping working in part or entirely.

I tried using Performance profiler today for the first time in Visual Studio 2022 on work laptop still on older Win10 1809. It refused to start and suggested repair install. Visual Studio Standard Collector Service 150 refused to start. Reason, long story short, it crapped out after being unable to enable RedirectionGuard, some security mitigation available in newer Windows versions. I opened the service's EXE with x64dbg, patched a single conditional jump instruction to become unconditional and now the profiler works.

No idea if there's anything for Teams, this doesn't work anymore. I know you have browser instance running for it in any case, but I prefer to not have these things in actual web browser and at least some resemblance of desktop application, even if the only reminder is tray icon with the context menu.

May have to rush to Windows 11 some day anyway, but not today, not yet!

Meanwhile, running Win11 at home which was supposed to be just temporary testbed for old new sound card, but don't feel like swapping things around. I know, I make no sense.

It does? Welp, it's either that or upgrading Windows, a major annoyance I think.

In some cases it means "we won't activate your license anymore".

I have never witnessed that.
We still run a ton of Win7 stations at the lab and even they can STILL BE ACTIVATED upon reinstall.
Despite Win7 not having "the sky is falling, where is my support" since circa 2019-ish.

Even the oldest Windows version to have activation, XP, can still be activated both online and over the phone.

Windows isn't the only software in the world with the concept of license activation.

Ugh, I regret getting access to code repo at work. Programming...stay the heck away is my advice. Why do I even bother? I hate programming, it's a sure way towards pain, misery, depression, drug abuse, alcohol abuse and suicide.

Can you take a vacation or do you have some time off from work available? It sounds to me like you REALLY need a break from that job. That being said, I know that "sure way" all too well myself. Besides, I don't want anything to happen to you - whatever you do - don't act of emotion or impulse. Try to take life day-by-day and appreciate what you do have - we at least have our freedom (while its lasts here in the States)

I have most of leave still available. Haven't really felt like taking it because what's the point? It's for people that have something to live for, not for walking dead.

I posted something controversial in anger on another forum regarding how some app developers restrict their Android applications from users rooting their phone. Earlier, another guy posted something helpful (in response to my existential crisis) in another thread. He then deleted it. I think I have spooked him.

I then deleted the controversial bits. It's not really me. But I'm in a dark place, things get to me and I lash out sometimes (very rarely, but still). I don't know, am I overthinking it?

We live in a very funny and strange and hypocritical and judgemental era.
I strive to always be "in the center". That is not the same as "taking both sides" - believe in something or fall for everything.
It really is funny what some consider "controversial, you're wrong, listen to me" yet others consider "passivist, live and let live, doesn't affect me".
We have folks on this very forum that get "censored" quite a bit.
And others that can say anything without fear of any hammer.
It's almost some sense of "do not censor that person, we will be held liable for the postal rampage in 'real life' if we don't allow the 'unreal vent'..."
I say that semi-sarcastically and not directed herein specifically, though the line of distinction is fine. A fine line indeed.
One person's "fake news" really is another person's entire sense of reality, ie, nothing "fake" about it.

To paraphrase Einstein, "It's all relative."

"Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else."

^Yeah, I know, I also have this void that I can't fill and I feel so empty inside. Just going through the motions during times like this. Things are changing here in the USA and not for the better.

All that comes to mind reading / hearing "USA" are the baby raping dick cutters (https://thewholetruth.data.blog/2025/08/20/how-parents-pretend-to-care-for-their-sons/) and school shooters.

Would you miss it, though? It's basically MSFN #2 with more primitive forum software. In the end, it all devolves to endless boring discussions of web browsers and how to download crap off YouTube with weird command line programs, all on crappy old Windows versions.

Yeah, basically.
It's almost like we wouldn't even have "forums" anymore if it weren't for folks using YouTube on XP!

Well ... I would miss the connections I've made with you folks here and from those form MSFN. My time was simply up over there anyway. I usually post more often on my autism forum and mental health forum nowadays to be honest. I don't have enough knowledge to help people all that often. I barely get by with what little I do know. Besides its good to chat now and again with people online since I have no life other than this but I guess given this toxic society I'd rather just keep to myself. Isolation is ideal for me. People upset me in public now. People are mean more so now that every I can recall sometimes so that I don't feel all that safe outside. Its cold here now and I can not walk outside and the people in this building are standoffish to older folks and I certainly don't look young anymore. Also I'm not in any shape mentally to deal with people now.

I wish I could move because this is not the way I expected to grow old in this mess; but I'm sadly stuck and I hate it.

No life here either. Guess it would be emptier with one less forum to click on to. But still, nothing to talk about, really. (Lame) job, eat, sleep, repeat. I seem to be well underway to turning into bitter old man and it shows.

I don't "get" people, they might as well be other species. Looks have big influence and you will be judged harshly if you don't look certain way. I look like a serial killer at this point, so hardly approachable.

I wish I knew what to say to help you, you seem like a nice guy just a lost soul and I can relate. Trust me ... you're not alone. I see that empty look in other peoples eyes and I know I have a vacant affect. Most of the time I'm out to lunch. I try to be (somewhat) engaging when I'm around people but I fail miserably. Even when I smile its fake but what else to do but fake it even if you aren't making it. This might come out of left field, but, are you the type that would consider having a pet? Fish? I used to have beautiful fish when I was growing up but where I reside now its not allowed otherwise I would certainly have fish again. A cute hamster maybe? Just tossing out what is coming to me as I type. Even I can't play computer games all the time as after a while that gets mundane. TV is so boring. I play the guitar (I haven't lately but I need to pick it back up). You can pick up a cheap guitar as the local pawn shoppe for 20 bucks and you might find you can get into it. I also don't get people anymore and here in the states things are getting pretty bad for timid guys like me.

On a brighter note, I do like that picture you posted. I would have liked your previous posting that that could mean I take pleasure on another persons pain and I know you're in pain. I tell you what, lets just make short term goals and keep going and not give up - there is a difference in 'giving in' and 'giving up' We can't beat the "system" on our own.

At least we are here for each other especially during this holidays when all we see are the fake hallmark card x mas pretentious phonies. My family is toxic and I'm glad to not be around them anymore, but I'll admit the holidays are tough for me. Honestly I try to sleep my way through it if I can. The only holiday I quite enjoy is Halloween but that is it. Those fake family gatherings are not to my liking. I mean, everybody is an asshole all year long and them all holly jolly and I can't drink anymore and everybody used to get trashed ... not for me. Besides I don't have the money to buy anything for anybody ... I get by with little means.

All that being said, I DO hope we can all catch a break soon; REALLY soon.
