How to safely disable secure boot on a ~12 years old computer ?
There is no ON/OFF switch. I can either switch from UEFI to Legacy OS or delete the secure boot keys.

What is the best to do without losing data or destroying the boot ?
And please, I don't want AI answer but personal experience.

Clearing the secure boot keys will leave you in UEFI mode, with secure boot technically enabled but not active (anything will be accepted to boot, even if unsigned). Disabling UEFI will obviously leave you not in UEFI mode.

So you suggest to stay in UEFI mode and to delete the secure boot keys ?
Are you sure it will be able to boot without altering the OS ?

Knowing that one PC is running Windows 8.1 and the other one Windows 10.

Indeed. If it currently boots, it will certainly boot just fine after deleting the keys. You would only need to enable legacy mode if you plan to install Windows Vista or older on it.

I believe this commit is a bad idea: Don't unnecessarily upsample audio to 32 bit

PCM means integer being used while Float means floating-point. The purpose of using 32-bit floating-point is to avoid clipping:

Because of a better amplitude, to sum it up:

For instance, 32-bit floating-point is the default mode used by Audacity when working on a sound track because you don't have to worry about levels until you save the file at the end when you then reduce the sampling rate, the bit depth, apply dither and use an integer format such as MP3.

So I believe 32-bit floating-point output is used for a good reason and for best compatibility and shoudn't be changed.

I've found that going over 16 bit for lossy formats results in quality loss, to the point where taking a bit of clipping is better imo. What got me to make this change was when I noticed a meme sounding weird in r3dfox compared to Electron (Chromium). So I went and traced this, and undid the change.

I also did the same for an attempted fork of Audacity, but it kinda died since I expanded the scope of it a bit much, and 2.3.3 does basically everything I need it to anyways.

Technically speaking, this is not possible. The extra pad from 16 bits to 32 bits is just filled with zeroes so it can't affect the sound quality in any way.
It's just about the decoded output. Upsampling can't create sounds that don't exist in the first place.

Windy.com works for me but it requires to allow WebGL.

But the user agent workaround for https://marinesafety.sa.gov.au/web-cameras doesn't work for me.
Whatever I'm doing with R3dfox I always get "high_res?codec=hevc"

It works with Firefox v115.36 ESR only if I open the frame in a new tab or window.
Then I get "low_res?codec=h264".

Looks like the site has a way to detect the real engine of the browser and/or the real OS.

I had to piece together and rework some Librewolf stuff for 153 because they're back on 151 and Mozilla changed a lot of stuff in the settings. Maybe it came from that idk, but also idk how it could. I just use DDG so I never saw any issue.

Looks like it's kind of borked though, because I've tried with a quite old graphics card and about:support shows hardware acceleration decoding available for H.264 + VP9 + AV1.
VP9 I'm not sure, or maybe its very first generation. But AV1, no way, not a single chance at all!

EDIT: after more investigation not even VP9 with this 12 years old Nvidia card.

Less than a year ago, when r3dfox was in the lower 140s, Firefox langpacks were fully compatible with it, leaving only the "redfox configurations" part of "about:preferences" untranslated (remaining in en-US); then, the "LibreWolf-ification" of r3dfox started gradually to take place, and that part was a conscious/intentional change; LibreWolf itself has become incompatible with upstream Firefox, to the point that LW now has to supply its own langpacks for i18n purposes...

And r3dfox now is in a state where, due to "multiple changes" (many originating from the LW fork), it has also become incompatible with Fx langpacks (and, I assume, also with LW langpacks) ; GH issues about this breakage have already been reported:

Another thing that kind of irks me is the frequent comparison to the MyPal68 browser; they are different projects, aren't they? With different target groups, probably (MyPal68 mainly appealing to XP-die-hards); I appreciate that their authors may share code/ideas/etc., as is the case with the e3k Chinese dev, but why should it be acceptable for a r3dfox user that MyPal68 is also broken when it comes to Fx langpacks? FWIW, the Russian community of MyPal68 users has contributed this; I don't think we'll see something like that for r3dfox and, in any case, I don't speak Russian myself ...

Yes, I totally agree and this is a real problem for many people.
LibreWolf bits when it's about security, and that doesn't mean anonymity, are ok but that shouldn't break such basic features like language packs.

I'm not a native english speaker so bear with me.
First things first, many thanks for this fork

Has anybody else had problems with logging in twitch.tv ?
When I try, it says my browser is not a supported one.
This happened since some months ago, and it's still happening today,
with the latest version of r3dfox I have, ie Plasmafox 153.0a1 (2026-06-09) (64-bit).
I tried with a user-agent override with
- general.useragent.override.twitch.tv
- Mozilla/5.0 (%OS_SLICE%; rv:149.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/149.0
but it didn't work.
Any ideas?
Should I wait for future release?

Maybe because it didn't have umatrix ( I added it later ) ? Who knows...

No problem with Twitch.tv for me with both R3dfox v151.0.2 and Plasmafox v153.0a1.
I'm using: "general.useragent.override" = "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:151.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/151.0"

I don't like to use the %OS_SLICE% thing because Firefox v151 is not supposed to run on Windows 7 or 8. Some sites may detect that.

But the version number has to be changed on each new version of Firefox because some sites don't like browsers which are more than one or two versions older than the current release version.
Current release of Firefox is v151 but v152 is to be released on next tuesday the 16th of June.

1: Have an install of Windows 7 or later. Vista might work, but I have not tested it.

1.5: Install basic prerequisites. .NET 3.5, .NET 4.x, VC++, etc. If you're using one of our ISOs, you should already have these. If you're using 8.1 Lite from here, you will need to grab C:\Windows\SysWOW64\dpx.dll from a regular ISO and add it to your install. If you're on Windows 8+ and having trouble installing .NET 3.5, mount your install media, open an admin cmd, and run this. `DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All /LimitAccess /Source:D:\sources\sxs` (Replacing D: with the drive your install media is in. For some debloated 10+ ISOs, you may need to do this with a stock ISO of the same major version.)

2: Grab the main prerequisites for building, MozillaBuild 3.2 and FWDK-15 (Specifically FWDK-15.7z and Min-DX-SDK.7z), and Git.

Newer versions now require NASM. I'm a bit skeptical of using the latest versions of dependencies due to potential unintended issues coming from having too new of a dependency. The minimum as of writing is 2.14, and so I use the latest 2.x version 2.16.03.

3: Install the prerequisites:
MozillaBuild, you can just run and install MozillaBuildSetup-3.2.exe. The only thing I changed is I added -3.2 to the end of the install path, so it installed to C:\mozilla-build-3.2 and that's all.

For FWDK, extract FWDK-15.7z and move the extracted FWDK-15 folder to the root of the C: drive. It should look like C:\FWDK-15\(MSVC15 and Windows Kits)

Other dependencies I like to keep under C:\DEV\ so it doesn't crowd the drive root directory up too much. This includes Min-DX-SDK.7z, extract it inside C:\DEV\. It should look like C:\DEV\Min-DX-SDK\(Include, Lib, and Redist) For NASM, you'll need nasm.exe from the downloaded zip file. you can make a C:\DEV\PATH directory, move it there and add that to the PATH. Or you could just stick it under C:\mozilla-build-3.2\bin. Either will work here.

Install Git, either as GitHub Desktop or regular Git. For detailed instructions on how to do that, refer to the r3dfox build guide.

4: Clone the source code:

By default Git/GitHub Desktop will clone with Windows style line endings since well we're on Windows, however this causes issues with the Mozilla build system. Open the command prompt, and use these commands to tell Git to use Linux style line endings.

Now you can git clone the repo either with GitHub Desktop or CLI Git. I've started using C:\Projects\ to store my browser projects, and I suggest you do the same. Go to C:\Projects\ and clone the repo there.

5: Preparation for compiling:

Navigate to C:\mozilla-build-3.2\, and create two new bat files there. Any name works, but some potential names are start-shell-legacy-fwdk-19041.bat and start-shell-legacy-fwdk-19041-x64.bat, or just simply shell-3.2-i686.bat and shell-3.2-x64.bat. Something to convey one is 32-bit and the other is 64-bit. Or you can just create one or edit the default start-shell.bat if you're only going to compile for one architecture.

For the 32-bit file, paste this inside it.

After this, you should be ready to build.

6: Compiling

Open the .bat file for the architecture you want to compile for, 32-bit or 64-bit. This will automatically place you in C:/Projects/, so to navigate to the UXP source directory, type `cd UXP` and press enter. If you're only ever going to build UXP and not eMail or any other project, you can add `/UXP` to the `cd C:/Projects` command in the two .bat files you created.

If instead the command prompt opens and instantly closes, you cloned the browser to a different path than C:/Projects/. In the case of UXP, I haven't encountered any issues from too long of a path, so you should just be fine editing both batch files to point to the path the source code is stored in. Since this is a Linux style terminal, you will need to use forward slashes for the path.

Now that you're inside the UXP source directory, you're almost ready to start building, but first you need to learn about mozconfigs. The browser uses a mozconfig to store compile flags and settings. This is normally set as an environment variable or taken from .mozconfig if none is set. However since we have a Linux style terminal, we can specify an environment variable before the command, letting us choose whatever we want, whenever we want, without setting any environment variables or swapping .mozconfig files. However if you're only going to ever use one mozconfig, you can add it as an environment variable. Then you don't need MOZCONFIG=xyz in every command.

If when running any of the below commands to compile the browser, you still get an error about Windows style line endings even after our preparation earlier, run these commands to fix it up.

Instead of building Lun3r or Hydra branded builds, the below commands will build unbranded builds. For Lun3r you will have New Moon, and for Hydra you will have Serpent, and this is what they will be referred to as from now on. To build the 32-bit release of New Moon, use the below commands. (Make sure you are in the 32-bit shell!)

Note: If you have already built New Moon, and want to build Serpent, or vice versa, you will need to clobber in between since they compile to the same directory. Clobbering basically just deletes the old compiled code and makes it so the next build recompiles the browser fresh. (Although you could probably set a custom target for one or the other and have two directories, but I haven't tried this yet.)

One or the other command should work since it goes in the same directory, but it's probably best to run both clobber commands.
To clobber the 32-bit release of the browser, use the below commands.

You may also want to clobber for source code updates. I'm unsure if UXP gets very many big changes that would necessitate a clobber, however it's always good practice to. Will avoid unnecessary issues. However if you have older hardware that takes a while to compile the browser, it is faster to not clobber.

Now you should have a compiled build of New Moon (Lun3r) and/or Serpent (Hydra). However another Eclipse Community UXP based project is Eclipse Mail, and Lun3r Navigator. If you want to build those, follow the below.

The generic name for Eclipse Mail is MailNews, and the generic name for Lun3r Navigator is BNavigator. This is what they will be referred to as from now on.

Note: You will want to compile New Moon or Serpent first before trying to compile MailNews or BNavigator. Some errors that may arise when compiling New Moon/Serpent might not throw an error when compiling MailNews or BNavigator, and may result in a broken application. It's best to make sure you can successfully compile the base UXP project first before trying to compile this.

Much like the above, you'll want to clone it with Git or GitHub Desktop, and I suggest the same C:/Projects/ directory.

For this project, it needs to link back to the upstream source, the platform directory needs to point to the UXP source directory. I accomplish this by making a symbolic link, however a git clone doesn't properly create this link, so you will need to manually recreate it. Inside the eMail source directory, delete the platform file. Now open an admin CMD in the eMail directory, and use this command to create the symbolic link, assuming the UXP and eMail directories are in the same parent directory.

After this, you will need to apply this commit to the UXP source directory or else you will be unable to build. This lets it work with external directories. If you wish to build New Moon or Serpent again, you will need to revert the change or else it won't work.

Write steps to install official VS2015+ and DX SDK for building with official tools instead of FWDK. (Although FWDK is highly recommended for massive space savings, but it falls apart when you want the VM for other compiling tasks so there's a case for both.)
