But this version as well as any older version has a problem with running on Intel's new CPU's, like 12th gen Alder Lake. Regardless of the host OS used,
guest Windows versions that are Windows 10 Redstone 1 and newer immediately BSOD and modern Linux kernels panic

The next version 12.1.0 fixes this issue, but it happens so that's the exact same version where the Vista version block was introduced.
Even global version overrides of the Extended Kernel and Second System don't help, so perhaps patching vmware files will be necessary]]>

For starters, "Fort Firewall" is not technically self-contained.
It requires Microsoft's embedded firewall / base filtering engine to run side-dy-side with Fort Firewall.
All firewalls for Windows 10+ use Windows Filtering Platform (WFP): Comodo, ESET, ZoneAlarm etc.
Base filtering engine is part of WFP.

Yeah, but I'd guess It's only because of missing drivers for new cards.

The reason why I think so is that you can definitely get ac on Vista and Vista was made before ac was a thing. netsh commandline tool on Vista identifies ac networks as n,
but from the router side I can see that in fact a proper ac connection is being made. The wifi card is Broadcom BCM94352HMB]]>

<![CDATA[General Software & Hardware :: CRT step by step buyers guide + tips and resources. :: Author Dimitris Balafoutis]]> https://board.eclipse.cx/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=885&p=7426#p7426
This is a step by step CRT buyer's guide written by a CRT user for future CRT users.

STEP 1: find space
Make sure you have enough space for it, as CRTs can get pretty big and space-taking.

STEP 2: Find a place to get a CRT
Thrift Stores or local auction sites (e.g Vendora for Bulgaria, Cyprus and Greece) are most likely the best option for you. You could check on e-Bay but be very careful, as you can often get scammed there. You can also try asking friends, colleagues or schools if they have one they could sell or giveaway to you.

STEP 3: Locate the best CRT you can find
If you have multiple options to pick, here are some things to compare:
-screen size (inches)
-dot Pitch (in mm, will determine screen sharpness)
-Screen curvature (curved or flat screen) Flat screen is better, but more expensive and uncommon.
-Colors
-Brightness
-Price (if its not a giveaway and its for sale)
TIP: Make sure you get a CRT from a known brand like LG or Sony. Avoid brands like Atari or Apple, as they usually have proprietary connectivity and/or are monochrome.

STEP 4: Test the CRT and avoid rookie mistakes.
You should test the monitor before buying. Power it on, and if it shows a clear screen, its probably good. If possible, test with a computer.
IMPORTANT: Its usually normal if the CRT makes cracking or hissing noises on power on, especially if its been a long time since its gotten power. Therefore doesn't indicate that its a non-working unit.

STEP 5: Final decision and setup
Make your decision and buy the CRT you've found the best. While you're at it, buy a good quality DisplayPort-to-VGA, HDMI-to-VGA, or DVI-to-VGA adapter if your computer doesn't have a VGA port, or else you wont be able to use it, as most CRTs use VGA only.
-Carefully place the CRT on the selected space.
-Plug it into power (if you're gonna use it on an AT-style computer, plug it in the power supply.
-Plug your CRT into your PC with the display cable.
-Now you should see display after turning your PC on.
-Now the CRT will most likely flicker (wrong refresh-rate to resolution ratio) and have a wrong resolution. Use your GPU Driver utility or CRU to find the best resolution-to-refresh rate combination (CRU will find it automatically) and then restart your GPU driver.
-Good to go!

I hope you wont have issues on the way.
If you have any issue in step 5 or want me to help you compare some monitors, feel free to reply down below, DM me directly from eclipse or from dimitrisbalafoutis@xmpp.chat/dimitriosss@escargot.chat or mail me at dimitris.balafoutis@gmx.com.]]>

As of the time I am typing this it is Lunar New Year Eve and I am still fighting my laziness but here we are arthurDance

BKED, shorts for Bách Khoa EDitor (Polytechnic Editor), is a word processor made by Doctor Quách Tuấn Ngọc first released in HE 11987. The story goes that after he went back from France in HE 11985, he saw the need of a program to help him making textbooks on programming for his fellow country. Having knowledge of developing on various platform such as DEC PDP-11, Intel SDK-80, Intel SDK-85 and Texas Instrument TMS-320, he went on to create BKED in x86 assembly and Pascal which can be run in graphics mode on a wide range of imported XT and AT clones with various type of cards form Hercules to EGA. The program was sold at the price of 1,500,000 VND which was absurd at the time. Nonetheless, it got sold pretty well with the biggest buyers being national ministries. He also sold around 120,000 copies of manual of the program. The program had helped the Ministry of Education finished report of a meeting right after it ends instead of waiting for about 5 days and moved away from making mimeographs for middle schooling graduation tests. The program felt into obscurity in the mid HE 11990s after the increasing adoption of Windows and Office combined with new IMEs for the platform such as Vietkey and Unikey.

On HE 12016-05-08, the author shared his copy of version 6.4 to the public. The Google Drive link seems to require Google account login so here is a reupload of the ZIP file uploaded there for anyone who despise anything Google related:

Update HE 12024-03-29: The link has rotted. Good thing I reuploaded it here kcSmile

(Also it has been confirmed by the author that the source code of the program had been lost over time in one of his comments on his posts, which should make it a good target for decompilation Thuink)

Upon launching the program, one is greeted with a splash screen to type in path of file to edit. The silver coloured box mostly tells about the program being a part of National Programme for Information Technology, supporting "ABC" character encoding which is a common name for VSCII and being made at the Information Technology faculty of Hanoi University of Science and Technology which is where the program name came from. Pressing Enter without typing anything gives you a menu to select the file instead.
bked file selection.png
(I used MS-DOS 6.2/V to run the program just since why not? pepeLaugh)
bked main.png
After choosing the file to edit (or in my case pressing Escape to create a new blank file) you are greeted with a default blue background white foreground pseudo-TUI with a horizon line at the bottom marking the end of the document.

F9: toggle Vietnamese inputting
Ctrl-F9: Switch between Telex convention and "typewriter mode"
Alt-C: Open formatting menu
Ctrl+G: Insert math letters
Numpad 1-9, minus and plus: Insert table primitives
F2: Save
F4: Spell checking
Alt-X: Exit to DOS
Quote:
The "UPPERCASE TEXT WITH DIACRITICS" formatting is interesting on its own. The VSCII character encoding standard defined 3 variants named VSCII-3 (commonly known under the name TCVN3 or simply as "ABC"), VSCII-2 and VSCII-1 with VSCII-2 being a superset of VSCII-3 and VSCII-1 being a superset of VSCII-2. While many European languages only need a couple precomposed characters to represent their languages, Vietnamese language requires 134 of such characters to cover all used combination of diacritics in both uppercase and lowercase which is not enough for the allocated extended ASCII codepoints. Therefore one could either violate ISO/IEC 2022 and replace some control codepoints with remaning unfit characters (as in VSCII-1), not bother with precomposed characters anymore and use a combining character encoding instead (as in Windows-1258) or (as in VSCII-3/TCVN3) input everything in lowercase and rely on programs handing such encoded text to use "uppercase fonts" on some part of the text instead YEP
There are more Word-like features such as tab alignment, margins, macros and printing but without a proper manual (The file Huongdan.pdf in the ZIP is only a partial scan of table of context of the manual book and getting one of its copies nowadays here in the Southern area is probably impossible) I could not demonstrate properly how featureful the program is FeelsBadMan Nonetheless I hope anyone who read this find it interesting and I will see you soontm baldiDance

After a couple of small compatibility issues on a retro-gaming rig of mine - a dual boot with Windows 7 x64 and XP x86 in a RAID 1 structure -, including a problem with GOG's servers, I'm starting think about this machine's future...

Solutions considered, for now : An obvious method would be, I guess, to transform my dual boot into a triple boot, slap on it Windows 10 for example, just so I can launch whatever bothers me in a suitable environment - such as Galaxy, whenever I really want to obtain Achievements for the few concerned games. This would also allow me to anticipate on other future compatibility issues... But it's not that simple, since drivers for that particular RAID card (a HighPoint RocketRAID 1740) and Windows 10 are sketchy at best. I didn't test every option yet, but chances of success seem slim. Buying a new RAID card could solve that, sure, but finding one which would cooperate with Windows XP, 7... and 10 isn't that easy. On top of that, I remember vividly how my last attempt to add Windows 10 ended years ago : the beast botched the other OSes' boot sector (which became unreadable), it ended up being the only accessible OS of the rig, and I ended up having to spend hours setting everything back online again. A pain I'd prefer not to go through again... and I'm not sure using a spare distinct drive for 10 would make its interaction with the other OSes easier.
Another idea would be to settle for Windows 8.1, less annoying in some ways and probably easier to reconcile with 7 and even XP in a multi-boot structure as I'm pretty sure I can find most drivers needed - which isn't the case with 10+ -, but would that truly help and, if yes, for how long ? I'm sure getting used to 8.1, which I rarely used up to now, is really worth it... Not if the same same problems include it within a year or two.
A more radical method would be to completely ditch my current structure, say goodbye to the current OSes on this rig - all of them -, then start again with Windows 10+ - mind you, 10's future itself doesn't look so hot... -, possibly adding virtual versions of XP & 7 whenever they'll be needed, but this obviously nullifies this retro-gaming rig's whole objective... which was to enjoy those older OS's interface, play games in their native environment - even those requiring quite a bit of graphical power, which wouldn't work well through a virtual version of XP or 7 - and avoid compatibility hiccups - which are common, even though GOG's versions help quite a bit.

Any remark will be welcomed... Thanks in advance !]]>

Also I'd suggest building a NAS instead of having a RAID card in your main. I got tired of waiting for hard drives to spin up all the time in my main PC and slowing stuff down and so I built a NAS. Doesn't need to be anything fancy, just whatever you have laying around. (with a bunch of RAM (8+GB) because it uses a lot of RAM for whatever reason.)]]>

8.1 often has the same connection issues as 7, so I think installing 10 or new hardware would be the only solutions.

Yes, 10 looked like the easiest solution in the long run. Not that I plan on using it a lot for now...
For the rest, I've never considered or configured a NAS, so I'd need to search a bit around for information. Do you mean that a network solution with only a single HDD constantly spinning (constantly or occasionally saving info elsewhere) would be more interesting ? Does your NAS cover all common security issues and allow for hot swap whenever (or if) your main HDD breaks ?
I've never really been looking for performance : more than backups, the main selling point of RAID 1 was the ability to swap hard drives in any case of trouble, including their deaths - effectively making that issue a trivial matter. I believe I didn't have to reinstall the OSes there for the past 15 or 20 years maybe, which feels great...]]>

Too fancy radio. I still got original Nyköping II Radio on my 1990 Saab 900. It only got cassette player which I plan rebuild. Before it I played music trough my Pocket-PC using tape adapter.
Well not that fancy radio, not new and not old enough to give retro vibes like yours, just a builtin Ford/Sony one, has bluetooth connectivity and being from 2013, it pairs fairly well with a 2011/2012 phone. Phones get "retro" status much sooner than cars.

A good upgrade would be a MirrorLink
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOCOqRSCilA
And there are actually modern car radio-like sets which claim to support MirrorLink, but idk if they would work with Symbian's Car mode

Good thing though that I am not only one still using wired headphones. They are bit harder to find on some stores, but I was able find few good ones eventually.
And speaking about Nokia hardware

I actually really like the sound of Nokia WH-902
https://www.productindetail.com/ps/nokia-wh-902

The best non-sealed in-ear headphones I've heard so far, the sound is a bit harsh (sometimes an advantage), but the clarity and details are pretty good, and they somehow manage to have a balanced amount of base despite having no seal.]]>

<![CDATA[Gaming :: Windows 7 and connection issues with GOG servers... :: Author BenjaminK]]> https://board.eclipse.cx/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=882&p=7400#p7400
GOG's provides a great service I sure wish more people would use, but it also, obviously, faces issues quite similar to any other online store. I stumbled upon a recent one with its servers regarding Achievements in various games and wanted some advice from Windows 7 or network enthusiasts...

I run a retro-gaming rig from time to time, using a dual boot with Windows 7 x64 and XP x86 in a RAID 1 structure, which has worked very fine for many years, still proves its value regularly and actually has (almost) no issues with GOG Galaxy. I don't use this client a lot - what for ? -, but it is unavoidable in rare cases of games whose Achievements are somehow fun or interesting to chase after.

Problem : apparently, quite recently - I don't know exactly since when -, GOG servers have started refusing to communicate with OSes older than Windows 10 specifically for unlocking Achievements which require non local data - understand not the simple "Has started to play game Y" or "Played game X for 10 hours". I've now experienced this issue with many versions of Galaxy, from the most recent one down to v1.2 - which is, as far as I'm concerned, already enough. All other common functions seem to work as intended, even though I also spotted issue with Cloud Saves - but I don't use those usually. This, anyway, simply means no Achievements at all for older rigs in any game bought through GOG. Nothing dreadful from my perspective, mind you, but I was still a bit startled for not a single post in GOG's forums mentions that change as far as I know... That is, before I wrote a short one about it. I've exchanged with GOG's support to obtain at least a clear, technical and definitive confirmation - apart from the usual "... no longer supported by... may not function correctly on..." (etc.) -, but last emails were pointing in that direction. It still seemed quite a touchy subject : the guy on the other side apparently genuinely didn't consider the possibly of an issue specifically related to older OSes at first, only thought about it after, and then wasn't really allowed or in position to give a precise stand on that matter. All he could say repeatedly was that, as anyone would expect, GOG couldn't guarantee anymore that functions such as Achievements (Cloud Saves, etc.) would work as intended, due to newer connection standards, security protocols and infrastructure updates... So, even though this isn't a huge hassle on my side - it's just about a couple of Achievements... -, I don't know what to think about it and, obviously, can only add that on top of anyone's reasons not to use that kind of launcher.

What's anyone's take on that matter ? Did people already run into that issue ? And is there any common networking method would allow someone to fool GOG's servers into believing that it receives packets from a 10+ rig instead of a Windows 7 one ? Apart from virtualising 7 from a Windows 10+ Hyper-V or VMware machine of course...]]>

I had thought this would've been about GOG Galaxy not connecting since I fired up 1.2 for once in forever to download a game and it was a bit finicky and I had to restart it a couple times for it to work. Maybe that was just their servers being funny at the time idk.
Probably. I don't have issues with downloading anything through Galaxy for now. Just the Achievements gone missing... which, yes, isn't exactly the end of the world, but I wondered if there was a way to help with that.]]>

I've started using the last x64 version on Windows 7 part of my retro-gaming rig and it feels great for now, but I did notice a small bugger : the three upper right options (Close, etc.) only appear when I activate the (main) title bar - as shown below. They'll still work, but are invisible...
Sorry for reporting that here, as I'm having issues with my (horribly old) Githhub account. It's been at least a decade since my last connection over there and I'll probably need to open a new one.

By the way, I also get from time to time the impression of slightly lower loading performances when handling the loading of multiple tabs, compared to Firefox 155 ESR. No special testing and I care so little about such delays that I wouldn't call that an issue, but, just by curiosity, is there any potential reason why a retro-gaming rig (with an old I5 680 and 16gb of DDR3) could struggle a tiny bit more with R3dfox ? or why 155 ESR could, maybe, open some websites a tiny bit faster ?

That occurred with older versions of R3dfox but I thought it should be fixed now.
Is it the same if you use another theme ?]]>

Yes, I considered that too, but no dice... Switching between 141.0.3 and 142.0.1 didn't fix anything either. Are there any parameters I could check or experiments I could make to help with your diagnostic ?

I do appreciate the fact that it toughness (including its bracelet) is off charts : sweat, water, heat, falls... You could more or less push nails in with it ^^ ! I remember an airport agent, at the customs, which was wearing the same model and commented it by saying "Yeah, of course, it's the only ones which really last for long !". That particular model also features solar recharging, which is... well... a neat bonus, even though I'm not sure you're actually saving time or money with it.
But no, you don't have access with it to a pulse meter. And yes, indeed, if your pulse drops to zero, you're in trouble :D !]]>

I will still never understand fascination with "post your desktop" threads.
So here, my desktop for your amusement.
Oh, reasons abound, but I think it's mostly about sharing one's sensibility regarding their tools of trade (so to speak). Some people, like you apparently, will end up satisfied with only slight modifications - and some users don't even bother to touch any visual option -, while others will feel the need to customise a bit more this small world of theirs ^^. To each his own comfort...

Here's a retro-gaming rig of mine, which is good enough to act as a main working machine :

My name's Benjamin, I'm a half british traveler better used to offline communities and communitarian work - not much social networks investment on my side -, and I've came to know R3dfox while searching for alternative software to fuel my old school rigs ; some of which have been running since the 90s, mostly under Windows XP x86 and 7 x64. That little red thing looks fairly good for now and I enjoyed the discussions I read around, so I'll add some questions for all techno-enthousiasts...

Speaking of which, I don't possess better computering knowledge than what any amateur picks when he fiddles with files, parameters and issues for decades, trying to understand how things work, but one of my (more) professional activity relates to proofreading, translations and editorial designs. So, even though automated methods abound nowadays and that internet-based activities aren't my speciality, I'll try to help if someone needs a peek at any kind of idea, text or design... No, life doesn't suck. I know this feeling, I had it too in the past.
What do you expect ? Things to happen out of the blue ? Miracles to magically touch you ?
Nah, don't wait for things to happen to you but do things. Whatever you want. Just be careful to stay away from any addiction. Yes, it can be hard sometimes but believe me that's the best cure. Move your *ss and you'll see that things will become better and better, easier and easier every day.
Just do it, yes you can! Enjoy life, it's a miracle and it's very short. Don't waste it because of dark thoughts. ;)]]>

Yes, yes, yes!!! I'm struggling with addiction now and I'm trying to cut back on the pills; but once you start its very hard to stop and the body revolts on you. I wish I never started. I kicked the booze but I'm still struggling with pills (I quit hard drugs years ago and I don't miss it) .... whatever you do never start Benzodiazepines even if the doctor prescribes it because they are a real bitch to stop.

I wish I wasn't wasting so much time on dark thoughts but its very hard when things are falling apart here in the States. You wouldn't believe it, like a poorly written horror movie I'm in. I agree, though, we must get up and stay up because when we fall its very hard to get back up when we fall hard. I'm not in a good head-space as I type this but I'm working on it. I need to start walking again because I've become sedentary now and that is a bad recipe. Yeah, life is short but its hard to find things to enjoy about this life when (so called) humanity is turning to crap.

I appreciate that you said "Just do it, yes you can!"

I'll try.]]>

it's being taken over by radical right and WWIII is likely brewing up.
As a centrist, I personally think it's the radical left doing most of the brewing.
Not all of the brewing! But most of the brewing.

Here's one thing that I've been laughing at for the past two weeks.
A free-speech activist is assassinated by gunshot.
And this has been the very FIRST gunshot killing I have seen in TWENTY-SOME years where "gun control" didn't populate *all* news for several days.

Shouldn't that disturb all of us?
Just what message is that sending - that killing somebody that disagrees with you is a perfectly legit utilization of owning a gun?

No reply needed, of course.
Just saying, as a centrist, the current hostile political environment has opened my eyes to a vast array of things that happen on the "left" and on the "right".]]>

First time trying out Custom Buttons extension (in Pale Moon). It took me hours to wrap my head around js-ctypes. It's a mechanism that allows calling native code from JavaScript. I managed to put together a button that shuts down (or aborts scheduled shut down) the computer in half-hour. Second function is putting computer into sleep immediately instead, depends on which mouse button is the button clicked.

It doesn't look too complicated in the end, but I'm slow.]]>

I just knew the extension exists, but didn't think of any button I'd actually need. The idea of the shutdown button came after realizing I use shutdown.exe from CMD fairly regularly.

There isn't a specific extension for managing custom buttons specifically for current day Firefox as far as I know, though they can come in form of userChrome scripts, which have to call functions to create the button, compared to extension that did the creation of the button while you "only" needed to add code for what it does. Quoted only because probably the part for what it does will likely be more involved.

With some copy pasting from another button, I actually got the button right the first try today in yesteryear's Firefox (125.0.3) in the sense that it could shut down the computer. But it didn't get removed when you disabled its userchrome script. Sometime later, I fixed that too.]]>

I was used to get portables of every software.... but today I cant trust on anyone that release a commercial software portable "just for free", and just as easy as "click" "download" "unrar". Everyone want to become rich mining crypto currencies nowadays.

Of course using an AV, malwarebites or similar toys are for kids (the evil greedy guys are not idiots of course, and they check against these tools).
I bet that many 3D gamers are not aware of the problem.. powerful GPUs/CPUs dozen of fans making noise constantly.... for me would be hard in these machines to detect the presence of that malware.

So my question is:
what are you using nowadays to detect miners running on your computers when idle?]]>

Just use NoScript ;)

You can also use some alternate DNS server like Quad9, Adguard or DNS.Watch which are blocking malware sites, ads and trackers.

That's for a browser but for a software there is not much you can do. You can block it from accessing the internet with a firewall, also use alternate DNS servers as seen before if internet access is required but the best is to download and use stuff from a trusted source ;)]]>

It highly depends what do you want. If you want allow certain CDN or other on certain sites and deny it on other and also control Media, css, frames etc. eMatrix will sweep floor with noscript. There is version for "modern firefox" webextension (umatrix) but I still roll on UXP based browser.

Downside is of course amount of work per site eMatrix requires but it is fine for me since there is very few sites I use and most are pretty basic.]]>

If something got past all of that, then I would notice my CPU or GPU pinned to 100%, or hell even 25% if they try to be smart. I'd notice the fan noise and slowness that would cause. I'd go to task manager and see what is using up all of that. This has yet to happen to me.

The suspicious activity of GPU is the main way I use to check these miners.. I would also recomend check with different GPU usage monitors.. because some of them does not show all the activity of your GPU... or bypass some apps (the evil guys that include miners abuse of that "weakness").

Now if you want to become boss of your system, you have to check for every connection that your computer is doing and decide, whether you want to have it in your system or whether to dump it.

Can recommend Wireshark as a good tool for looking at network traffic. Then you need to figure out a solution for actually blocking connections.

Hm, you're right, that would be really sophisticated, but it is possible, if the miners would actually do work even when being offline, especially since on Windows 10 "Shut Down" doesn't mean shutting down the computer anymore.
In that case, you'd see any activity by monitoring network traffic over a longer period, maybe a whole day.

In the other hand there are people that upload several videos daily... because his job is to make videos... because a channel with more videos will receive more money. (I think you get what I mean)

I find X-Lite to work the best and it's the slimmest. My main reason for going to it was so I could shrink the partition size by like 16GB and more easily keep multiple VMs to build different versions or experiment.]]>

<![CDATA[General Chat :: How do you detect coinminers? :: Reply by The-10-Pen]]> https://board.eclipse.cx/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=881&p=7443#p7443 I forget which one but I'm "majority-percent" sure that it was 22H2.

The experience HIT ME IN THE FACE with an expired license and a solicitation to purchase StartIsBack.
Something I never requested to be installed in the first place!

Ever since, any trial-run (INCLUDING X-LITE!) that INCLUDES anything that I never requested to be installed is THROWN IN THE TRASH BIN.
Without Prejudice!

a) did the creator of StartIsBack use this as a method of distribution to SOLICIT for his product to be purchased? (ie, a "bundle")
b) did the creator of StartIsBack AUTHORIZE his product to be distributed in this manner? (should Microsoft sue StartIsBack for this "bundle"?)
c) did the lite-os creator distribute his personal preference software with an unauthorized third-party distribution?
d) maybe that third-party license won't expire, then shouldn't the third-party creator be suing for an unauthorized distribution and hacked license?
e) et cetera...]]>

I have a streaming web site (Hulu) that has an annoyance with any italicized word being preceded and followed with an incorrect comma.

Seems it should be easy to CORRECT using a userscript but I haven't found anything online that targets something like this.

Fingers crossed that somebody here can assist and thanks in advance.
