For one, just WHAT does "user experience" really mean?

ie, I'm very much anti-telemetry and Privacy Rights.

Ah with your link I realize this update is ancient, before SP2. The newest SP2 classpnp.sys is far later than 5.2.3790.113, so this is just not applicable to it.

This topic might belong into the 'Research Network' category, since more research is needed is resolve this issue which affects Windows 8.1/10/11.

One way to potentially resolve this issue is to modify system files to alter the x86 branches leading up to DPI virtualization. But that would require admin permissions and it would be reverted with every system update. I tried to find the relevant x86 branch at one point in Windows 8.1 but failed to do so, so I still mainly use Windows 7 on my main PC.

Another way could be to identify the setting corresponding to 'Disable display scaling on high DPI settings' or 'Application' and then automatically apply it on every *.exe file that runs. This could be done by inserting values for every *.exe file with data "HIGHDPIAWARE" into

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers

registry. But for this to work reliably, it would have to attach to a file index such as Everything in order to detect created *.exe files to ensure that the setting is applied before the program runs.

It's really driving me crazy since it seems like this should be just one integer comparison branch in DWM that has to be edited and yet it completely ruins the experience.

By itself, that global environment variable applies to the current session in Windows 11 x64, but after a reboot it gets ignored. But when I looked into it further, I found this topic: https://www.eightforums.com/threads/global-dpi-scaling-disable-for-win8-1-for-all-files-users.42452/ When I tested it on Windows 11 x64, it actually works for non-system programs, so that solves the issue for the most part, though it doesn't really work for system32 programs though (this is problematic for users trying to replace notepad.exe and mspaint.exe with Windows XP versions, though it can be workarounded by making them batch files or shortcuts instead).

(I guess that's another one to add to the huge pile of essential things to do before Windows 8.1/10/11 becomes somewhat usable)

It's pretty damn broken when I can't even view my own screenshot properly. (If I press print screen and paste to XP Paint, I expect the screenshot to appear in exact 1× scale, not some virtualized scale) It's also a huge waste of screen real estate if the application draws on a lower resolution canvas than the screen itself. Windows also supported high dpi for about 13 years (Windows NT 3.5 in 1994) before Vista introduced DPI awareness declaration, and TrueType text can easily adapt to high dpi configurations, so plenty of applications support high dpi without declaring dpi awareness, making DPI virtualization especially wasteful for those applications.

Unfortunately, things are different with the 150.x versions.

When the menu is turned on and you hover over the bookmarks works, all folders will be marked.

If I start a video conference, the message appears:
"WebRTC is not available in your browser
It looks like your browser does not support WebRTC.
Please enable it or try another browser."

Note:
media.peerconnection.enabled is true

Is there a way to change this?

I also wish e3k-blah would have done this, instead of going on his "let's make XP compatible again" distraction. The browser was called "Firefox for Windows 7", so stick to being focused. Instead, I had to listen to a bunch of crap as to why I should be more "grateful" for volunteers making these forks. While they're not "wrong", people build expectations once they find a working solution for modern browsing on Windows 7 and 8. Then to watch it go kaput is irritating.

It's not that r3dfox 155 is taking some time, it's more I'm just busy with other stuff and not going to be working on anything past potential 153 ESR for now. At least until e3k catches up with the modern versions. I'll probably do 153 ESR, and release versions branded with both r3dfox and r3dfox ESR branding to keep both up to date with security stuffs. I will be doing 140.15 ESR soon, but also a 128 ESR for XP too.

No, you don't need to do anything. I pretty much only did that since some big events had gone down off platform, and I was tired and wanted to sleep and so I just felt better locking the forum and GitHub page so it couldn't be spammed by attackers or anything while I was asleep. It did work, however I was still too stressed out to be able to sleep that much.

Also I'm not sure if there was something to quote for this but I realized I should probably mention it. I'll be reenabling webrtc for the new 153 builds, which is also another reason I wanted to have both branded builds for it.

I have the same issue as described in this report:

R3Dfox-ESR-140.11.0 on Win7 I found it to cause resource exhaution after some usage.
By that I mean "windows resources" - the ability of the OS to draw widgets.
This happens after using the browser for a while like 15-30min with 10+ tabs. or even less if using JS intensive pages like FB.
Closing the browser recovered the situation.

Interestingly enough, Firefox-ESR-115.40 update (recent) had a similar issue causing 100% RAM usage after a while and stopped loading new URLs then stopped responding.

See on multiple computers.

Today I updated to R3DFox-ESR-140.14.0 (portable, overwriting files except profile).
After over an hour of similar browsing things seem to be stable so far.

So MSFN is down again.
Owner keeps citing "bot attacks" and basically catering to the userbase to NOT use anything like Cloudflare.
I can't help but kind of laugh, to be honest, because sites like https://rtfreesoft.blogspot.com/ is *NEVER* down and does not use Cloudflare.
Kind of just sit back and watch, lol.

From my looking into it, it's a much simpler setup.

For forums, the entire web UI and stuff is PHP and every request requires querying a MySQL database, each page is dynamically generated by the server and sent to the user on each request. This doesn't require that much processing power to do, but multiply this across hundreds or thousands of requests at the same time, and the server's CPU can get pegged and things can break down.

Going to a post on the rt1 blog gives an url ending in .html, and when blocking javascript, you still get the full post. So the software that rt1 uses for his blog takes advantage of the simpler nature of blog content and just generates a static html file server side which then the user's browser requests and the server simply just sends. This is far simpler than having to dynamically generate a forum page on each request. This is also why the Eclipse main site always loads nice and fast while the forum is completely down and gives a 502 and whatever. Even pinned at or near 100% sending basic html and css is nothing.

Split this post from previous because this is a hypothesis of sorts and I'm not sure how exactly it works nor do I really have the will or patience to dig into it.

I also assume the forum sequentially generates every page without sharing much info before or after. If the server is backed up and your request takes too long for the server to get to, I assume it just drops it and gives you a 502 error. If it were to generate multiple pages at a time, I don't think you would get a 502, it would still load but even slower. Except I feel like the hammering of the CPU would be worse, and things could break down even harder and it could completely crash idk.

phpBB, used for this forum, Eclipse Community, shows the time it takes to generate the page you see at the bottom. You can hover over it for more detail too. eBoard2, when it was hosted gave even more verbose info too. When the server is being hammered, if the page eventually loads for you, you may notice the time isn't that much different from when the server is not under such stress. I believe this supports my previous hypothesis of sequential generation since if it took you like 15 seconds to get the page, but the time at the bottom to generate the page is more like 1 second, well what else could that mean?

Looks promising.

BUT... the tiny flaw I see is the line about "Your Rules. Your Logic. Your Stack. Your Traffic."
I could be wrong, but I think that the forum owner is battling two choices, 1) [which I think he should do!] use Cloudflare, let Cloudflare do all of the logic and rules and log-learning and updating and self-adjusting, or 2) take it upon himself to monitor logs, adjust rules, apply manual updates, etc.

I really think, and it may just be my view of things, but I really think that the owner wants NOTHING (aka, "very little") to do with #2 and would rather the server crashes *CONVINCE* the "haters" that the server MUST USE CLOUDFLARE.

ps - I should point out that Cloudflare's FREE VERSION offers bot protection !!!
Sitting behind Cloudflare doesn't cost a d@ng penny!
The problem (as I see it) is that MOB MENTALITY RULES - the MOB has spoken, the MOB does not want Cloudflare.
So the owner (to me at least) seems "ok" with the server crashing.
ie, (in my view) enough server crash downtime and that MOB will *change their mind*.
