I also wanted to test the RTL8126, I was hopeful since it's Realtek PCIe 5GbE and the Realtek USB 5GbE worked fine, however the driver inf had nothing for beyond 2.5GbE. I finally tested it today, and I modded the driver and got it to install, however it only "negotiates" at 100 megabits and sends/receives no data. So I guess the PCIe driver has no 5G/10G capability at all while the USB driver has it just disabled.

Something else to note with the RTL8157, it seems consistently unstable when used with Ryzen (500 series chipset, 5000 series CPU) USB controllers, however it's completely fine with other USB controllers in the same machine. (other being sample size of 1 though. Intend to test Intel long term at some point soon. Also I'd like to get a(nother) UPD720201 based card to test with since those are the only decent add in controllers you can get.) Unstable meaning it will BSOD the system every so often with 0x00000133 or 0x00000139, however that's usually after multiple days of the system being powered on and probably more the fault of the shitty Ryzen USB controller anyways. I haven't had enough time to see if Linux or Windows 10 encounters this issue though, although I have had one weird freeze with Linux when using it.

I was using the built in USB port in my 2080 Ti for this adapter, but that GPU has since died. Due to having no other controller, I've been using AQC107 Ethernet recently. It's actually pretty decent on 8.1 with the 2.1.18.0 driver from 2019/06/13, while the same controller is awful on 10 and Linux, not sure why. Wouldn't recommend it though as it's considerably more expensive on a PCIe card than just getting a RTL8157 and a (hopefully) decent USB PCIe card.

On a maybe more positive note, I want to eventually fork the Dietmar open source RTL8125 driver and attempt to port it to the RTL8126 and see what it can do. Which would mean the card could work on even XP. However I have no timeline for that, nor do I know if I could even do it.

I use my own userscript on all video web sites.
A brightness slider because the entire "color pallette" on some videos look like sh#tty shades of black for EVERYTHING.
And width/height sliders because I'd rather have a SLIGHTLY stretched video but use the entire viewing pane instead of stupid "black bars".
I can also fast-forward or rewind 15 seconds per click or slow playback to 85% if the action is too fast and I can't read CC fast enough, lol.

The userscript pops up my sliders only when I hover the mouse in the upper left corner.

My problem is that on some sites (technically, only Popcornflix so far), due to dynamic content, the userscript isn't "reloaded" / "reapplied" if I navigate back/forward to select a different video or if I refresh/reload the page.

Any suggestions?

Me personally, I view this as BAD NEWS, just kicking the can down the road.

Extending 115 ESR is like driving a car with "rust" (pun intended) on each and every piece of metal, putting a sticker over the dashboard "check engine light" so that you don't have to look at it, three different types of tires because the owner buys USED tires one at a time to "extend the life" of their 'winter beater', two of the four tires bald and bulging, spider-web cracks in the windshield because the driver gets Road Rage and punched it for no other reason than somebody passed them on the right instead of left on a 4-lane highway, driving without a muffler because you play the radio so loud that you don't hear the muffler anyway, and a den of possums living in the foam of the back seat.

I used to think that! But then I started to actually get to know a ton of the demographic (ie, "old people", "not tech-savvy", "can't afford a new computer") to which you refer. NONE OF THEM USE FIREFOX !!! They use "hand-me up" computers that their family and friends give them after upgrading their own computers. Even DONATIONS from local churches because you can't SELL them, you have to GIVE THEM AWAY (because we really do hang onto them FOREVER and they're not worth a dime once we finally admit it's time to get rid of). Or they're simply not as "poor" as their humility has others thinking them to be.

The harsh REALITY is that it is only people like us on this forum, and forums similar to it, that are DELUSIONED into the whole paradigm of "Long Live XP" or "Long Live 7". Claiming anything to the contrary is just "backwards logic" attempting to justify the extension of something with one foot in the grave. I would submit that it is ONLY the "tech-savvy" that DOES use Firefox! Whether it be primary, or secondary, or just as a hobby. Plus, us tech-savvy folks wouldn't have to denigrate Microsoft as much/often as we do if they didn't do such a GREAT JOB at making GRANDMA and GRANDPA 'able' to use any version of Windows if they've so much as used any previous version of Windows. Microsoft really does have that marketing aspect CORNERED. They can not (and never will) be able to DO as much as us tech-savvy folks. But any GRANDMA or GRANDPA that has sat in front of Win98 *CAN STUMBLE THEIR WAY INTO THE "START MENU" OF WIN11* and find their browser or email or SOLITAIRE and h#ll, they'll even find and LEARN a stupid little thing called CANDY CRUSH. That and, um, duh!, if you are are so much as even reading this, you ARE "tech-savvy" and it is that aspect of your character that not only makes you a Firefox/fork user, but ALSO is what makes you a MEMBER of this web site. Grandma's and Grandpa's don't exactly have ANY shred of interest in forums like this.

Mozilla "extending" support for ESR 115 makes them nothing more than what a prison ward would refer to as an ENABLER.

It is one thing to "long live" a HOBBY, but call it what it is, a hobby, extending ESR 115 does the NON-HOBBY person ZERO 'good'.
Even Mozilla knows that. But they are being smacked around like a cat playing with a half-dead mouse by MOB MENTALITY of the "Long Live 7" gang(sters).

Last week I downloaded r3d fox for my W7 and I managed to update to v148.0 from Source Forge but I'm not sure how to enable the automatic updater.. Can someone please explain to me step-by-step (like I'm a 5 year old) how to Run CreateTask.ps1?? I don't tend to log in to my browser - does it only work if I log in?

(Also, I can't seem to get 3rdfox to add Yahoo to Mailto the way I have it in FF (can't remember if I edited handlers.json file to do that).

The .ps1 is just a Powershell script, you should be able to double-click it or right-click and select Powershell from menu.

As far as it "doing anything", you have to have a third-party program called Python installed, which also usually requires setting path variables.

Do you have PYTHON installed ???

It does not require you to be logged into your browser.
It only requires you to be 'logged into' the WINDOWS USER ACCOUNT from where you ran the .ps1 to create the task within that USER ACCOUNT.

Hi,

Any antivirus software you could recommend where the real time web scan works with r3dfox?

Was using Avast on Firefox, but just confirmed with Avast support board that Avast Web Guard real time anti-malware scanner does not work on r3dfox. (Even though it works on Firefox.) Avast fails the eicar.org anti-malware test file for anti-virus software on r3dfox (but not on Firefox).

Yes Avast can still do manual scans, but I was wondering if there are is any antivirus software where the real time web scanning feature works with r3dfox on Windows 7?

And wouldn't just an ad-blocker do a BETTER JOB as far as browsing experience and preventing MALICIOUS JAVASCRIPT?

They automatically scan webpages while you browse too and block any malicious infections on websites. The problem was that when I accessed the eicar test site with harmless test files for testing anti-virus software, it wasn't triggering Avast in r3dfox (but did in Firefox).

But the solution provided by Duke (renaming r3dfox.exe to firefox.exe) seems to fix the problem)

Will there likely be any other problems caused by renaming the r3dfox exe file? (Other than obviously I need to change the filename in my shortcuts settings too.) Of course I left all the other files alone. (This is the installed version of r3dfox, not the portable.)

As a Windows 7 user, you should not expect 100% of web sites to work, that seems a tad unrealistic in this day and age.

Hello, I have a problem with integrating r3dfoxportable as the default browser in Windows 7 Ultimate. The profile I created is located in the \r3dfoxPortable\Data\profile folder and I always opened the browser via r3dfoxPortable.exe in the \r3dfoxPortable folder (base folder). After integrating it as the standard browser, everything points to \r3dfoxPortable\App\r3dfox64 and the r3dfox.exe there is called and r3dfox even creates a new profile under \r3dfoxPortable\App\r3dfox64\Profile. Unfortunately, for example, when I open a link in Thunderbird, my profile is not opened but everything points to the newly created profile. I would be grateful for any advice or instructions on how to correctly integrate r3dfox with the desired profile.

Why are you using the PORTABLE version?
Switching to the NON-PORTABLE solves your issue.

Nothing "for or against", per se.
It just seems to me that the simple WANTING of a DEFAULT BROWSER runs *AGAINST* the true INTENTIONS of *PORTABLE* because the mere act of setting a "default" requires registry entries and folder structures COUNTER-INTUITIVE to the very nature of what "portable" strives to achieve.

If you are going to take a "portable" but then re-create what the portable removed (ie, permanent registry entries, for example), then you really should just use the "real" version and not the "portable" version.

I work with several operating systems installed in parallel and would like to be able to access the same browser from each. With Firefox Portable, it has never been a problem for many years to integrate it into several operating systems in parallel as the standard browser. Since a few of these operating systems are Windows 7, I think it would be good to continue what worked with Firefox portable with the r3dfox portable and would like to know whether and how that is possible. It behaves differently than Firefox.

I personally think we need to dig deeper than a third-party tool.
If the claim is true that r3dfox "behaves differently than Firefox" in this regard, then I think it is a FAIR QUESTION to find out WHY.
Not to be misread, r3dfox is SUPPOSED TO "behave differently" in SOME aspects, but I would submit that this is PROBABLY not one of them.

Now then, having said that, I still DISAGREE with the HACK-ATTACK to turn a PORTABLE into something that is NO LONGER PORTABLE.

He is comparing r3dfrox portable to Firefox Portable.

MOZILLA DOES NOT OFFICIALLY RELEASE A PORTABLE FIREFOX.
Unless I missed it...

So just what are we comparing here? PortableApps.com's Firefox? winPenPack's Firefox? Something found on GitHub?

They are making their own builds of various portable programs using their own launcher. The binary files themselves shouldn't be different but the way the whole thing works is different. With browsers they are using both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, if availble, so the whole package is really fully portable on any Windows version.

PortableApps.com apps (PAA) create their own temporary registries.
They are designed to work WITH EACH OTHER (but one of the apps has to be running).
I myself have HUNDREDS (not an exaggeration) of PAA's.
I put office-related programs on one flash drive, audio/video on another flash drive, etc.

I have to ASSUME that the OP is using a PAA THUNDERBIRD and it was designed (by way of its temporary registry) to work *with* PAA's FIREFOX *as-is*.
Only because PAA Thunderbird was RUNNING was the OP's PAA Firefox launched with a click of an email link.

These are actually quite easy to "trace".
View your registry *before* launching Thunderbird.
Then view the temporary registry entries that are created WHILE Thunderbird is running.
All of these registry entries delete themselves from the OS Registry when Thunderbird is closed.
They are stored in a folder/file within the portable Thunderbird's file structure to get "re-added" to the OS Registry at next run.
Then removed again when Thunderbird is closed.
Rinse... Repeat...

Don't think so. When compiling most applications, they do parallel compiling, which is building multiple components at the same time. Usually this is one job per processor thread or gigabyte of RAM, whichever is lower. This number should get automatically determined, however I just force it to 16 in the mozconfig in my case. (I should add this to the guide now that I think about it.)

Now you might think that's good and all, but confused why I said don't think so? Reason being is Firefox uses Rust and it spends like 20 minutes compiling a single Rust component, gkrust, with a single core. On top of that, it uses an absurd amount of memory to build this single part. This is where the memory requirement comes from.

Although you should be able to get away with just making a big page file and it should* just work. Will probably take a while longer to build, or maybe not idk.

I backed out due to HDD grinding that seemingly took forever that didn't get anywhere and being worried about prolonged mechanical stress.

I thought maybe there's some tweak to reduce how much stuff is built in parallel, but yeah, seems single RUST thing wants 12+ GB RAM, so no go.

AFAIK this occurs on Github only, any repo. This does not happen with Firefox 115.32 ESR.

I've just noticed something else about downloading files with R3dfox. Sometimes I can't download 2 files or more at the same time from the same site, I have to wait for the first download to complete.

Example:

https://www.xmedia-recode.de/download/XMediaRecode3627_x64_setup.exe
https://www.xmedia-recode.de/download/XMediaRecode3627_x64.zip

If I click on the links it's ok. But if I copy the links one by one and paste and open each one in a new window then nothing happens for the second and third download while the first one is downloading.
It's working fine with Firefox 115.33 ESR, all files can be downloaded at the same time.

I have no download issues on my system. I've even downloaded hundreds of files one right after another, and it's been fine. I don't know why or how this would happen.

For some reason it doesn't happen when you click on the links but only when you copy them (right click → Copy Link Location) and then paste them in the address bar of a new window (not tab) + Enter.
And only with some sites, not all of them. A good example with the links I gave in my previous post, it always happens with this site.

I always either just middle click to open new tab or right click and open in new window. I guess that's why I've never seen it. That's such a weird issue, and I highly doubt any r3dfox change would make it happen but also idk.

Hello.
I'm using win 7 with r3dfox (actual 148.0 (64-bit) because discord added some encrypted voice (E2EE ? ) calls and desktop app cant use calls anymore.
I can call, i can see mac and probably android streams, but i cant see video stream from windows (error 2012) but i can hear the sound.
Also nobody see my streams.
Checked also on another totally different pc with win7
I also tested supermium and there everything works fine. I'm feeling so bad using chrome based browser... Thats why i'm here and saying about all this stuff.

Modern r3dfox follows most Librewolf changes, and from Librewolf, I remember disabling one or two preferences related to a Mozilla VPN, so this should just be disabled by default.

Personally, speaking solely for myself and my own "safe hexing" practices that have kept me virus-free and malware-free for FORTY YEARS and the last thirty of which was outright AGAINST bottle-knecking anti-virus and anti-malware real-time scanning CRAP slowing down my machine (but have voluntarily installed them over those thirty years and discussed their performance-killing aspects on forums like this, lol, sure, there are some good ones, but few and far between and uninstalling them becomes such a nightmare at times that you are better off with a format/reinstall which is the same result you would have had if you were infected with what it was to safeguard against) and even AGAINST *self-induced* *man-in-the-middle* Tor Network EXIT POINTS, I would NEVER "trust" a VPN that is "IN BED WITH" Mozilla and all of its on-by-default telemetry and data collection mechanisms (which Chrome has also, but the end user in one versus the other has always boiled down to making yourself a needle in the haystack 2-miles high or a needle in the haystack 70-miles high).

This is nothing more than a DESPERATE play on "VPN Myths" and getting Firefox users to PAY FOR their "free" web browser.

There is no "logging or selling" of data, any Firefox user that "enables" this feature is simply HANDING OVER the data that Firefox by itself doesn't collect but WILL collect through its VPN.

No, you don't have to pay for the browser itself but only for the full version of the Mozilla VPN.
The free version of the VPN remains free but it's limited to 50 GB a month and it requires a Mozilla account.

You can activate the feature manually by setting via about:config the option browser.ipProtection.enabled to true .

Considering Librewolf sets trr to 5, that's probably just the best course of action anyways though.

Differences between network.trr.mode values:

0 - Off (default). use standard native resolving only (don't use TRR at all)
1 - Reserved (used to be Race mode)
2 - First. Use TRR first, and only if the name resolve fails use the native resolver as a fallback.
3 - Only. Only use TRR, never use the native resolver.
4 - Reserved (used to be Shadow mode)
5 - Off by choice. This is the same as 0 but marks it as done by choice and not done by default.

Ok ... so, I've been using the newest Mypal and it hasn't crashed all day today and I worked it hard (go figure).

However, does anybody else see those white lines I've circled in red? When I open the browser that is what I see, but, when I start typing in the address bar and head over to the destination, they go away?! I don't get it

Otherwise, not too bad and I'll keep it and see what happens going forward. I also have the same white lines in 74.1.2. Sorry I forgot to mention that before.

Well, per my eye doctor's instructions, I do not use "dark mode".
Think of "dark mode" as a drug, it feels right so "how can it be wrong?", but then check how it's effected your vision a decade from now.
Those were my eye doctor's exact words. But like politics, it's probably one of those things that even eye doctors are split 50-50.

Do you have those "lines" (even if a different color) when *NOT* using "dark mode" ???

How does dark mode affect your vision? I've been with glasses for the better part of a decade, and since like iOS 13 (2019), i've used dark mode on the daily (except on this forum), and I don't see any vision problems.

I did read a sh#tTon when my eye doctor told me this, because I DID NOT BELIEVE HIM !!!
From "inconclusive" to outright BIASED to riding the fence with no real conclusion.
I went as far as getting a SECOND OPINION and that doctor TOLD ME THE SAME THING.

Again, ask your own eye doctor.
Do some research and be sure to read BOTH SIDES. "Been there, done that."
I did not believe my eye doctor. You may very well not believe yours either, lol.

My own theory is that there comes a point where the DAMAGE IS ALREADY DONE, so it no longer matters anyway so just keep on "darking it".

Actually ... to better answer your question. Those small white lines are there in "light mode" but you can barely seen them unless you're really looking hard. I also normally don't use dark mode (only for testing purposes) since my XP machines are light; dark browsers stick out like a sore thumb.

I also wear glasses and dark mode doesn't seem to cause me any issues - my eyesight is not as good as it was when I was younger and my prescription has changed slightly over the year (will be 54 in 3 weeks). Speaking about glasses ... I can NOT stand when they shine the lenses and when I get my glasses ... I make damn sure to tell them to not shine them and I have to make the VERY clear to them I need them dull and flat ... and of course they roll they eyes at me but I don't care. My eyesight is important and screw their feeling towards me. I've been fucked over in the past with this issue and my night vision is still poor regardless of the glasses.

I will try to take a picture when I'm in a better frame of mind to do so. Right now, I've been dealing with mind blowing depression and anxiety ... which causes major headaches and leaves me unable to do anything at all. I watch my DVD's when this is happening.

Again, I will get around to it when I can. I'm just not doing very well at the moment. Sorry for that, guys.

I've seen "dull" lenses and I always just thought they were massively "scratched up", like they used sand paper or steel wool to clean them, lol.

Lol ... well, I didn't mean I want them scratched up either Its just when they "shine" the lenses the light just reflects to the point that I can see sheep-le behind me. I have 3 pair of glasses now (all the same prescription) two of them change color in the sunlight but then when you get indoors you can see for a few minutes. My vision is not all that great now. Do you wear frameless glasses?

I just passed by looked and want to say why is not obvious that legacy firefox addons never would work.
You take addons form the mozilla site, if the latest version fails then try previous versions.
I confirm that the latest ublock 69 works.

Also still not fixed white line yes, I suppose this is minor bug, shall fix next versions eventually

This is also the first XUL browser to get e10s stable and enabled *by default*, which is also another major pain point, so now one page freezes instead of the whole browser.

YT Polymer loads 3x faster, crashes are less common, etc. Most of these changes will be backported to Eclipse Hydra/Lun3r first, then upstream UXP.

I'm afraid that isn't going to be "fast enough" for my usage.

My real hardware is slower and older but scores more than twice as fast on a "competing browser".
The redacted tab is just to hide my email address being shown on that tab.

Slower by 18% or 48% depending on how you count it.
On an e10s browser, it's that 48% that's technically more important, not the "single thread rating" of 18%.

ps - my Speedometer 2.1 score of 71.0 is *WITH* several extensions also loaded.
My "baseline" (just the browser and some flags/settings changes, no extensions) is close to FOUR-AND-A-HALF times faster.
On a laptop that is older and slower than your test machine. And also 8GB RAM to your 32GB RAM.

Again, GREAT WORK and somebody finally came along to improve PERFORMANCE.
Just that I, as the end user, really has to use what is best for me and my OS.

I was still on XP just a year or two ago.
There comes a point in time where the end user has to ADMIT that they (myself included !!!) is lying to themselves when they (myself included !!!) shout from rooftops on how much "better" (have to include "air quotes") their (myself included !!!) "legacy OS" 'is'. Not to be misread. 10 and 11 *sucks*. But they **CAN** be modified into truly awesome (but don't hold your breath expecting Microsoft to do that for you, lol).

I can obtain Speedometer 2.1 scores on my older and slower laptop.
But at this stage, I think I'll delay until further optimizations are in place.

If I remember correctly, the "other" UXP browsers that I ran on this older-and-slower only scored in the SINGLE DIGITS.
But I'm not 100% sure on that from memory. That could be the even older and even slower computer used out in the garage.

AdGuard has released its latest Ad Trackers Report, an annual look at how advertising and tracking systems affect internet traffic worldwide. The report shows that ad trackers accounted for 10.22 percent of global internet traffic in 2025, marking a clear increase compared to the 7.84 percent recorded in 2024.

The figures reflect what the company describes as "raw requests", meaning the initial connections made when a page loads. These requests are often invisible to users but are triggered alongside normal website content.

A single ad-related request can also trigger additional background calls to other services. AdGuard estimates that blocking one primary request prevents an average of 4.17 additional requests from taking place, showing how quickly traffic can multiply behind the scenes.

North and Central America recorded widespread increases across most countries included in the dataset. The United States rose from 6.61 percent to 10.25 percent, while Mexico climbed from 7.49 percent to 11.61 percent during the same period.

South America showed similarly steady growth, with several countries moving from mid-single-digit levels into double digits. Peru increased from 6.60 percent to 12.51 percent, while Colombia and Ecuador also recorded jumps into the 11 percent range.

Europe presented a more uneven pattern, with faster growth concentrated in Eastern and Southeastern countries. Belarus rose from 7.61 percent to 13.20 percent, while Greece and Serbia also moved into double-digit levels.

Western and Northern Europe showed slower changes overall. Countries including Spain, Italy, and France recorded moderate increases, while Germany and the Netherlands continued to post lower figures compared to much of Eastern Europe.

Asia displayed mixed results depending on location. Countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia crossed into double digits, while India saw a slight drop from 12.48 percent to 11.12 percent despite remaining at relatively high levels.

Africa recorded some of the biggest increases overall. South Africa rose from 7.80 percent to 13.69 percent, with Nigeria, Egypt, and Morocco also entering double-digit territory.

Across all regions, the report shows a consistent upward trend rather than isolated spikes.

My state is purple.

I walked into a local home repair company and they were all wearing masks and even went as far as to use their filthy dirty hands to pull a mask out of a box on the counter and hand it to me, saying I could not shop at their store without a mask.

I grabbed the mask with my filthy dirty hand and dropped it to the floor, stepped on it with my filthy dirty shoe, and said it was just as clean now as when they handed it to me.

Then I asked them if their corporate headquarters were in a BLUE STATE !!! !!! !!!
Then turned around and walked out.

I already have a complaint! It's the only site I've ever bumped into (that I recall) that disables the F12 key to access Dev Tools.
I use Dev Tools daily, can't live without out!

Found these as "fixes".
I'm using the first, shorter and more to the point. Second likely works as well, just seemed excessively long.
Both are userscripts where my slightly-above-average knowledge of javascript can "follow" and "see" what it is doing.
Both appear "safe", I just prefer the shorter of the two and prefer the "EventListener" over the "setInterval" method.

Recently switched back from Win11, the temporary installation that was meant to be just a test bed for new old Sound Blaster Audigy Rx. Somehow it lasted about a year and the only EAX enabled games I got from start to finish were...Call of Duty 1 and United Offensive expansion...and Max Payne 2.

Worried about leaving traces of Creative's software around, plus having another sound card's software in place that I put back now, the one with clicking relay and LED lights...was the reason for using separate Windows install that happened to be Win11.

That Win10 install has some quirks, but still a breath of fresh air after that much time on Win11. Incredible how sluggish Explorer in Win11 is.

You can't run stock Vista on a computer that was brand new 5yrs before Vista was released.

The vital key here is that the T480 does *NOT* meet the hardware requirements for AI-accelerated Copilot+ features.
The non-plus portions of Copilot app or web versions will run on the T480 (which lacks the dedicated keyboard Copilot key).

But it would surprise me heavily that you have not DISABLED the Copilot (even the non-plus portions) on your 8yr old laptop.

My HP Envy x360 AMD Ryzen 5 laptop is from 2021, came with Win11 Home 21H2, and has the Copilot key.

But technically, I cannot speak towards its "performance" WITH that OEM Win11 21H2 and nor with pre-installed Copilot.
I also cannot speak towards the difference between "regular" Copilot and Copilot "plus".
Also do not know if this 2021 came with "plus" pre-installed.
Even if it did NOT, a "normal" debloated version of Win11 would "update it" to "max", whether that be "normal", "plus", or something in between.
The FIRST thing I did with it was FORMAT it and never even bothered to try Win11 !!! (zero regrets!)

I only use Win11 inside VirtualBox VMs.
Only after I teach myself to debloat it to my liking will it ever land on 'real hardware'.
But I'm always (*preferrably*) several versions of Windows behind !!!

I just find core components messed up in a way on Win11 that they're not on Win10. IDK, guess I'll start considering new computer when Win10 is no longer comfortable compatibility-wise. Should take a while with my needs.

Also not sure how fast my computer is going kaput, but it started happening regularly that it doesn't come out of sleep. Not all fans even start up and it's just frozen, reset button doesn't budge, can only hold power button for 5 seconds to power it off, then can turn it back on and it resumes normally from disk.

To be honest ... once my Optiplex 745 craps out (could be any day) I would not go back to XP and would likely be using windows 11 at some point. I look online at computers and everything is so over-priced nowadays - I didn't buy my two computers they were gifts and the association would prefer clients to all be on a phone or tablet but I don't want that for myself. Is ASUS any good? I read good things but I wonder about the proprietary drivers and hardware that is fixed if that makes sense (not sure if that was the right phrasing). I've never done much with the hardware other than just to keep them clean inside and out. I guess I would have to debloate after the fact because that would be far over my head sad to admit. I would likely also be using stock then. Ugh! I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there. My Dell Dimension 3000 Pentium 4 is useless with only 2GB of ram (can't upgrade) and can't handle the modern web ... it's in very good shape though because it never got much usage after I was gifted the Optiplex 745.

I imagine this PC still has some life left unless things suddenly change for the worse. The issue with resume used to happen once in a blue moon and I suspect it's a bit more likely to happen with external USB HDD plugged in, though I'm not sure yet. I didn't notice anything else off.

Hardware is overall more expensive due to AI craze and who knows what else. I'd probably try to go with Win10 first if I suddenly ended up with new PC. Probably something pre-built...ASUS doesn't sound bad, but I'm very out of the loop with computer hardware.

I have a Raspberry Pi 5 and I guess I could try that instead, but, it's Linux...and Linux is weird, buggy, fonts don't look nice...

That's why I bought a 9-month old laptop a year ago and a brand-new desktop this past November.
Get the upgrades in place *before* all that ***CRAP HARDWARE*** is in place (and NOW while that ***CRAP HARDWARE*** can still be *DISABLED*).

You wait until your ALREADY-DYING is completely DEAD, then the writing is on the wall on just what type of hardware you're going to end up with a year from now, three years from now, etc.

CRAP HARDWARE as in AI-enabled hardware or such?

I've been looking at new computers couple of months ago. But I thought, do I really need a new computer? I don't even do anything interesting on the old one.

I asked on another forum about this resume from sleep issue, it could be flaky +5V SB (stand-by) rail. Which in theory, could be easily fixed by replacing power supply.

Is there any difference if you resume from "hybrid sleep" versus "hibernation"?

I once had a laptop "fail to resume".
For me, I only used "hibernate".
For me, it wasn't technically failing on RESUME, but rather it was not COMPLETING its go-into hibernate.
When it "looked like" it was done going into hibernate, I could put my ear to it and still hear an internal fan or HDD, something, still *ON*.
It was this stage that it would "fail to resume".

BUT...
If at this stage, I pressed AND HELD IN the power button for SEVERAL seconds (with my ear still on it!), I could hear it complete the "go-into".
At this stage, I could release the power button, return a day later, press the power button normally, and it would RESUME FROM HIBERNATE.

But... That only bought me so much time. It was a "freebie" but I still wanted to get as much life out of it as I could.
I ended up getting too FRUSTRATED with that sort of "go-into" that I stopped even TRYING to "go-into".
I ended up never actually using the Start Menu to power down / reboot / or go into hibernate.

I would just always PRESS AND HOLD the power button for SEVERAL seconds and basically FORCE a **CRASH** whenever I wanted to power it down.

Resuming from RAM specifically is the problem, resuming off disk (hibernation) is fine. I think it goes into sleep OK, just doesn't always wake up.

Ah, I've seen that before.
In my case, I had *mixed RAM*.
Despite both being the same TYPE of RAM.
I had one slot populated with Brand A and the second slot populated with Brand B.
Third slot was empty.

Despite that *mixed RAM* working, once it finally powered on, it would never have any power-up issues if Brand A was removed, or if Brand B was removed. It just stopped liking both of them being populated. :

After some quick tests, after the conclusion was that it might just be unstable with resume only when all 3 sticks were used, the situation has worsened radically after putting things back like they were. Same symptoms after initial power up, after two power cycles, same. I unplugged the power cable of one of the disks and then it could POST, I went into BIOS to put things how they were (no CMOS battery) and after couple of seconds on the BIOS settings screen, screen went garbled. It normally responded to power button and went off, I unplugged the power and will leave it as is until new power supply arrives.

It was ordered before the situation worsened, but for all I know, it might already be too late, we'll see.

It's like running a "detergent" through a very old engine.
The "sludge" in that engine wasn't really hurting anything clinging to NON-VITAL WALLS of the insides of that engine.
But running that "detergent" knocked the sludge off the non-vital walls and into very critical and vital moving parts of the insides of that engine.

This is why I don't dare take anything apart on my old machines for the reason(s) you mentioned the-10-pen. I'd bet my computers are already held together by the debris and sludge - better to leave things as they are when dealing with old machines. I didn't know that about a vehicle ... I'll pass this information along to my drivers and support workers.

I blow out dust every year or two. And the tests were just seeing how it works with only the original 2 RAM sticks and then with the third one on its own. There weren't any errors on Memtest86 in single pass.

Looks new PSU is not arriving before next week. Also have spare graphics card in case the current one got wonky.

Time is really dragging by now. This computer is one of the few (good) things I have in this life.

Regarding desktop computer, guess I'll see what still works or not next week. The laptop also got a new problem in recent months that upper and lower portion of the screen blinks in white for short periods, most often when it's turned on, seems it's triggered by lid movement.

Elections are tomorrow. No idea what to vote for. Does it even matter? For all I know, the end of the world is coming.

I'm speaking from a "been there, done that" perspective.
Because I too used to throw money at computers in order to own them for TWENTY-PLUS YEARS.

I did this for THREE different computers over the span of thirty years, give or take.
Overlapping ownership, I'm not 80+ years old with the first at age 20 or late teens, lol.

So I went from the "lifestyle" of replacing a computer every 2.5 to 5 years to throwing money at them but replacing only after 20+ years.
Again, I did this on three different computers. Making a computer last 20+ years is very very VERY easy easy EASY.
It is *NOT* some "wear it on your sleeve" rite of passage into some form of Ageless Wisdom. Rather, it is the OPPOSITE.
It does 'require' THROWING MONEY AT THEM. RAM here, PSU there, CPU here, motherboard there, another round of RAM, et cetera.

In a nutshell, DON'T THROW GOOD MONEY AFTER BAD MONEY.
You don't (though many do!) spend $1000 on tires JUST TO SELL the vehicle and the new tires got you an extra $100 on the sale price.
You're still IN THE HOLE $900.

LAW OF DIMINISHING RETURNS !!!
Hint: You already passed it by buying a new PSU instead of replacing a capacitor in the old one!
A *few* dollars for a capacitor and firing up your own soldering iron and your own labor versus spending 130-TIMES to 500-TIMES for the new PSU!

I'm not going to go as far as to say it was the "biggest mistake I ever made", it was *NOT*.
BUT... There is a point of diminishing returns. And again, you passed it by spending money for a new PSU.
I applaud the goal on one hand. Again, been there, done that.
But the other hand KNOWS FROM EXPERIENCE that 12 to 17 years is one thing!
But 20+ is something entirely different (and becomes borderline insane, again, "been there, done that").

It reminds me of a project dad had me do on a Commodore 64 in the late 80s.
He had me do an "amortization table" on his 30yr mortgage on the house we moved into when I was in my early teens.
He retired a decade or so later and another decade or so after that, he came to me with that old C64 printout (and some grade-school drawings).

It was a moment of pride for him, "Look, I bought a house for $34k in 1982 and I just sold it for $112k".
After originally listing it at $135k and taking over six months to sell !!!

It was a moment of pride for me. I handed it back to him and proudly proclaimed, "YOU LOST MONEY! You have to account for the mortgage interest, the new siding, the new furnace, the new roof, and the pool and deck you added but only used that last half-summer of ownership. Every "investment" has to account for deposits and withdrawals before you can call it a gain or a loss based solely on first number versus last number. Inflation ALONE puts you over $105k, YOU LOST MONEY."

I thought about the issue with some capacitor. Might open the old PSU some day to see if anything stands out (me and electronics, though). I just wanted a quick fix, this computer's been with me for so long that it's hard to just let go.

Money always finds the way to slip out off one's pocket. I threw more of it at dumber shit at times, even if I'm considered more of a saving type. My brother always says better spend it to have something rather than save it and have nothing.

The point of diminishing returns definitely stands. About the money part, you'd also have to get something used rather than new to save it. It's not much different from cars, huh?

My newest laptop is a screamer and it came from a PAWN SHOP.
Still in the original box, still had all of the plastic stretch-wrap, battery was still in a separate box.
Literally all but BRAND NEW, never used, battery never inserted.
But technically ONE YEAR OLD (okay, 10 months!).

Got it for HALF what it sells for per "MSRP".
Sure, a large bit of "right place, right time".
But it turned me into somebody that now visits PAWN SHOPS ***OFTEN*** just to look at the new arrivals.
They only take laptops and not desktops and only take one year old or younger and MUST HAVE ORIGINAL BOX.
Turns out, the PAWN SHOP works with several local BUSINESSES and basically buys their "surplus".

If your town doesn't have any PAWN SHOPS, it's WELL WORTH IT to drive the hour or two to the nearest "big city".

During my college years, I had ***TWENTY SIX*** credit cards !!!
They would set up tables at the cafeteria and hand out applications like Tic Tacs.

I had a credit card debt over THREE TIMES my annual income!
NEVER late on ANY payment, NEVER late on rent! No real DIME to my name!
My dad told me to file bankruptcy and it INFURIATED ME.
I asked for "help" and he told me to file bankruptcy, saying I'd never pay all that debt.

I DID PAY IT ALL BACK !!!
*ZERO* handouts from anybody, *ZERO* debt-reduction "services".
I PAID EVERY D@MN PENNY BACK - then showed dad my statements and said TOLD YOU SO.

Truth be told and in full honesty, IT WAS BECAUSE OF 9/11 THAT I WAS ABLE TO DIG MYSELF OUT OF THAT HOLE !!!
Everything went to ZERO PERCENT balance transfer promos.
I had TWENTY SIX credit cards. All I had to do is transfer every balance to another card's ZERO PERCENT promo.
Then transfer again 6, 9, 12 months later.
NEVER late on ANY payments. I was able to keep transfering for ZERO PERCENT until that entire mountain was paid off.
