Every time I remember that I should post my desktop is when my desktop is all messy and I need to clean it up, however I'm always too lazy to clean it up.
Amen.

Again, I agree with K4sum1. I would suspect the laptop battery is starting to show its age quickly, as they sometimes do. Matter of fact, one old Dell I had included a battery recall I was unaware of. By the time I noticed the battery life suffering extensively, it was too late. The recall program h...

I agree with K4sum1, Every computer has a "coin" battery to keep system configuration settings saved, date and time included. Typically a 2032 battery as in my case. Most laptops I've owned have an easily accessible panel on the bottom, likely retained by a small screw, to access it. I'm n...

Was this even real? I only saw it in winworld but only ever got a "version" of SR2 was Word 97 in the Unofficial Win98 SP3 The only thing I can recall, If you had installed SR2 for Word, you couldn't install other office applications after the fact. You must uninstall the update first, pr...

I've got a few old ones I could list for fun, some I still use or just pull out for fun. Newer ones are in the signature... IBM PS/1 Imagination System: 486SX 25 MHz (Upgrade 486DX 33MHz); 24 MB RAM; Windows 3.10 (Upgraded to Windows 95B). Runs Minesweeper and 3D pinball! Dell XPS T600: Pentium 3 60...

I actually got Windows 7 to work perfectly on that laptop. All it needed is a BIOS update because apparently the BIOS it shipped with had a bug with Windows 7 which wouldnt let the OS run and BSOD during boot. probably a intentional marketing trick to force users onto Windows 8/10. Awesome! That so...

What are you trying to do with this build exactly? The main reason I ask, I have many old machines I've tried different things on... just because. Is this one of them?

I don't like conformity either. TPM 2.0 sounds like a positive thing on paper, but quite the opposite argument as everyone has already stated on this thread. In today's time of supercomputing, anything is possible. Anything can be manipulated, with the right tactics and brains involved. I don't beli...

Well, i tried that. I formatted the USB in MBR, enabled Legacy Mode and Legacy USB mode, plugged it into the USB 2.0 port and whoops... This happened... Im gonna try r3ns patched ISO tomorrow and see if it will help... Is there any way you could possibly backtrack on the BIOS versions supplied for t...

I see no issue. Finding the drivers may be a challenge, if you don't already have them. I've upgraded at least 3 Dell Skylake desktops to Windows 7 from XP. Two of which were intel-based chipsets, and one hybrid nforce4 SLI Intel (Dell) edition. Each had their own challenges. Just make sure you have...

Same thing I went through moving from XP to 7 on a nForce 4 RAID setup. Got it to work, eventually.

This driver won't help..

The 8GB Ram stick was the same style in the Acer 2-in-1 (I mentioned this laptop in a different thread). In a bizarre twist, the 2GB Ram stick from the new Acer did not work for some reason. At least that Acer has 8GB instead of 2GB. The module could be of a higher base Megahertz range and not back...

I noticed this earlier this week after a Geforce Experience and driver update. Looks like a tweak here and there, some visual aspects as well. Nothing spectacular. Visually, maybe a little more aesthetically pleasing in some regards. I didn't pay any mind to a performance increase, if there is one.

Any Ivy Bridge laptops that were produced/on sale in 2015/2016 (2015 the year when Ivy Bridge was discontinued)? My Acer Aspire E1-531 bit the dust today. Besides the noise it would make when closing/opening the lid, the fan started to make noise on and off. The graphics would also show weird lines...

I did as well, continued on the look and feel. At that point, I was glad we were past the Windows 95/98 office suite look. That includes IE.

Ivy Bridge processors were a good line, and my laptop has treated me well under Windows 7. Still have it, still use it. The 3632QM is reliable, as is the 3630QM, and a slightly faster clock (ask R3n).

Invoke a google search for "ACPI\VEN_8086&DEV_0F14" and see if that yields the driver you're looking for. It works for intel chipsets (XP/Vista/Win 7) and a few different drivers available. I know what you're trying to do and it has to be possible for fucks sake. One of these intel dri...

In WIN 7, It was mainly when Microsoft began the "Monthly Rollup" program in WU and discontinued individual update content normally seen on patch Tuesday. Sure, they let you preview the "Rollup" in most cases, but then you'd have to go to the trouble of deciphering the entire thi...

Exactly! Get back to the basics people! Here's an example... Fumigate your entire home because of two house flies, or buy a fly swatter? Hmm... I know what I would do.

Boredom, mostly. Does help when I know the name of a file and the original is gone - MS have lately tampered a bunch with the DX9 redist download, so searching exactly: "directx_jun2010_redist.exe" "index of" in google would likely return some random storage of said file untouch...

Yes, it still clicks with me when I see it, although I have Office 2003 installed on the experimental PC.

Yeah, I've found some oddball things in the past by essentially using Google as an "Apache2 open directory searcher" XD
That's an interesting thing. Something I wouldn't have considered as feasible. How did you stumble across this?

I find searching the device ID reported in devmgmt.msc can help. For driver exes, and infact many things, sometimes pairing file names in speechmarks (if nothing relevant comes up, prepending, in speechmarks, "index of" to the query) This is true, the IDs do help. True, that I never tried...

Didn't they start sneaking that shit into critical security patches at some point after 2016? I believe so. It's when MS got desperate that they were not meeting their quota of expected "free upgrades". When Win 95 was released, copies flew of store shelves. Those bastards knew the times ...

I agree with you both. It was reasonably stable, as you said. 8.1 being the favorite, as I believe it was all of ours. It was not surprising, however, when it was announced 8.1 would be the last major release of the series and expiring support which ended up the same as 7. As the old joke goes, &quo...

If you were forced to use Win10, what build would you use? No need to reply, really... but I never kept up with the builds. On our Windows 10 business PCs and laptops, if "it" asks permission for an update, I let it update since I eventually won't have a say in the matter anyway. This irk...
