Need help with installing Windows XP from a USB using Ventoy
So, i tried installing Windows XP from a USB flash drive using Ventoy on my Acer Aspire 7730g.
I used a Windows XP Pro VL ISO with SATA Ahci Drivers slipstreamed into the installation.
For some reason tho it would show me a BSOD during the "Setup is starting Windows" part.
I tried using different ISO's, different USB ports and using different SATA controller modes but the same BSOD persisted.
No other information was given in the BSOD other than the error number but apparently it indicates a inaccessible boot device.
Can anyone give some clues on what i am doing wrong?

Windows XP hates installing from USB, you're best off getting a USB CD-ROM drive and installing it from CD-ROM. That's how I install XP.

Do you have any CD's / DVDs you can write to? I have a SP3 .iso taken from a legit winxp disk if you want it.
Installing from .iso / usb rarely works on xp unless youre using a VM.

i do have several empty DVD's but i dont feel like wasting 1/4 of the over all storage just for a 600 MB ISO.MelonicOverlord wrote: ↑20 Jun 2021, 11:44 Do you have any CD's / DVDs you can write to? I have a SP3 .iso taken from a legit winxp disk if you want it.

Ventoy was a bit buggy for me, wasn't even able to boot a Vista ISO. Easy2Boot doesn't like modded XP ISOs.
Your best bet is WinToFlash. I've used it with success multiple times on my laptop.

Unless it's a DVD-RW, no.

Not in my case. I have an older Acer and Dell, both from 2007 and 2010 respectively, that installed Windows XP just fine from a USB stick, and I just prepared the stick using Rufus. Later hardware will give you troubles, even if you use USB 2.0 (although if you are using SP3, drivers for 2.0 should already be included. Plain RTM (2001) and SP1 (2002) XP may not have them though).

UPDATE: After trying other programs i eventually tried winsetupfromusb.
In the first part it refused to copy some files as well but in the second part it just went blank after restarting (just like wintoflash) when starting the system without the usb inserted at boot (but inserted during the Xp boot screen), it would start the second phase but complain about inaccessible files.

isnt the second phase supposed to boot from the internal HDD and not the installation media?R3n wrote: ↑22 Jun 2021, 20:05How have you been booting into the second phase of the setup?CalmCreeper360 wrote: ↑22 Jun 2021, 17:07 UPDATE: After trying other programs i eventually tried winsetupfromusb.

With modern Windows, yes and normal XP installs, yes, however with XP from USB, you need to boot to the USB and then start the second install phase process from it.CalmCreeper360 wrote: ↑23 Jun 2021, 12:01isnt the second phase supposed to boot from the internal HDD and not the installation media?R3n wrote: ↑22 Jun 2021, 20:05How have you been booting into the second phase of the setup?CalmCreeper360 wrote: ↑22 Jun 2021, 17:07 UPDATE: After trying other programs i eventually tried winsetupfromusb.
