AM4 boards Windows 7 compatibility list

Unread post by K4sum1 »

If one board from a brand is confirmed to work/not work, it's probably safely assumed that it will be the same as any other board with the same chipset as that board.

If you have any results that you want to share, reply to this post, and I can add it with credit.

Also boards confirmed to work with a 1000/2000 series chip could potentially not work if used with a 3000/5000 series chip. (Only X570 ASRock boards are confirmed to have this behavior) Assume APUs don't work unless otherwise specified for a board.

Key:
ACPI - Requires modded ACPI.
CPU - Does not work when used with a 3000/5000 series CPU, however works with a 1000/2000 series CPU.

AM4 boards Windows 7 compatibility list

Unread post by blueclouds8666 »

Working motherboard:
- MSI A320M-A PRO (MS-7C51)
- BIOS Version: 1.30 (11/08/2019)
- Tested CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 1200
- Features: Legacy Mode, CSM

Both Windows 7 and 8.1 work perfectly fine and stable on it.
Windows Vista also runs surprisingly well, quite stable on my experience.
Windows XP also runs perfect with the ACPI patch (otherwise you get 5A BSOD).
All onboard peripherals have Windows 7 and 8.1 drivers.

The GIGABYTE B450 Gaming X officially supports Windows 7 on Zen and Zen+ Processors,
And it works flawlessly on newer CPUs as long as you use the Backported XHCI driver from Windows 8 and use the 'High Performance' power plan in the Control Panel.

Tested on my Ryzen 7 1700X, Ryzen 5 2600 and Ryzen 7 5700X, BIOS Revision F62.

Note:
On some boards there might be instability if the power plan is not set to 'High Performance',
So if you experience instability try setting the power plan to 'High Performance'

Instability how? I wonder if it's related to the 2000 series Taichi issues. Also thanks, will add it to the post.

I remember the BSODs, but i am not sure about general instability.
It has been a long time since i have had to deal with this issue.

Working motherboards:

- GIGABYTE A520M S2H
- BIOS Versions: F15, F16
- Tested CPUs: AMD Ryzen 5 3600, AMD Ryzen 7 5700X
- Features: CSM, Underclock, Manual core voltage

- ASRock A520M-HDV
- BIOS Versions: 2.73, 3.00
- Tested CPUs: AMD Ryzen 5 3600, AMD Ryzen 7 5700X
- Features: CSM, Underclock

Both run Windows 7, Windows 8.0 and Windows 8.1 perfectly fine (tested in CSM mode).
ACPI is perfectly working, including hibernation and sleep. No need to patch or replace the driver.
Onboard peripherals include Realtek 8111H ethernet and Realtek ALC897 audio on both of the boards. The former has drivers but the latter does not, so you are limited to the generic High Definition Audio driver provided by the operating system, though, that shouldn't be a problem: sampling output options range from 16-bit 44100 Hz to 24-bit 192000Hz, both line in and microphone in are detected and work fine. audio quality is also very good, better than ALC888 with native drivers. As for USB3, multiple community-modded drivers exist, i personally use the canonkong modded ones and work with no issue. NVMe worked on Windows 7 and 8.0 using modded Phison NVMe 1.2 drivers by canonkong.

There are derivative models, such as the A520M DS3H and A520M-HVS, which are very similar, so those likely have the same level of features and compatibility, if not the whole A520 lineup from GIGABYTE and ASRock. The other brands remain to be tested for confirmation.
