is windows 10 still going to be usable in 2023/beyond? with windows 11 slowly taking over as the new major operating system and windows 10 slowly getting discontinued will it still be usable soon? ive already noticed a lot of people have already moved to newer windows versions and with other forum shutting down everyday because of this (like the conditions at msfn right now) is there even a future for legacy forums and even windows in general? thanks

Yes, even after all the updates, 11 still appears to be 10 with a different look and requirements. Everything meaningful that 11 had is already or was backported to 10. Combined with the hardware requirements and late launch, I'm betting that 10 will be supported by third parties for even longer than 7 was. However that is a bit of a incorrect statement, because 7 hasn't been meaningfully changed since around 2012 or so, and 10 has gotten feature updates pretty often.

Basically, 10 is likely to last pretty long after the EOS date. 11 has no real gain over it, and 11 can't officially be installed on a lot of hardware still out there. A lot of people will stick with 10, and Microsoft will have to get the shills running extra hard to scare people about the EOS date.

Except for DirectX 12 Ultimate, Tabbed Explorer *cough* QTTabBar *cough*, new design again, laptop hibernating, better dark mode, the return of the startup sound and 3 other things that M$ pushes onto you.

I've heard about DX12 Ultimate for like forever now, I'm pretty sure it's in 10.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Win 10 LTSC 2021 is set to get updates until 2030. And since it won't get major updates it is a prime candidate to modding.

I guess, but afaik 22H2 has more stuff like DirectStorage and optimizations for Intel 12th gen and later. I think 22H2 would be the better base unless these can be or were backported to 2021 IOT LTSC.

I think transforming 11 to 10 will be a better option going forward, since 11 still uses NT 10, and the 10 explorer works just fine under 11

Hmm, if 11 after 12 is out can be made into 10 2 then maybe. However from what I have seen I don't have much hope. Also POPCNT shenanigans.

POPCNT is only in the new USB drivers. I'm pretty sure someone can backport the one in W11 23H2.

I believe I do have reason for hope, as even in the latest Windows 11 Canary, you can just pull the Windows 10 Explorer from W10 22H2 and slap it on W11.

Will just have to see then. Are there any real core differences that make 11 more appealing over 10?

DX12U, more updates, iTunes (for some fucking reason), some games. People asked the same question about W10 when it first came out compared to 7 and most software straight up abandoned 7 today. So in around a year or so, software will start dropping 10. People are now starting to drop support for 10240 (10 RTM)

DX12U and apparently DirectStorage seem to be completely supported in Windows 10 now that I look.

More updates goes out the window once you start modding.

iTunes shouldn't need 11, and if it does, just don't buy an iPhone lol.

There is no major core difference between 10 or 11 that makes 11 more appealing over 10.

I'm curious about Server 2022 though. It seems to be a newer base than 10 being a 2xxxx build number, while having the 10 GUI and same requirements as 10.

Some stuff was backported, what exactly I'm not sure though. As for the 12th gen, I'm still on a 4th gen i5 so that's a non-issue for me
Currently have my 21H2 LTSC install themed like Vista as close as possible, though I'm currently looking into some new stuff to make it look like XP.

Actually theres no point in dropping Windows 10 support in non-UWP softwares anyway, as 10 and 11's APIs and kernel being apparently similar.

Anyhow assuming if Win10 is already on EOL, the most likely to happen is that eventually after year or so, most Store apps would not have supported 10 anymore, its already seen on some apps like Intel Unison, among some newly developed UWP applications found in Store. If lucky enough, Store's server would probably have remained it up for Win10 users, unless 12 is released.

It's much better than Windows 11; I guarantee you. Try debloating it and using it, it'll be the ONLY OS you'll ever NEED. And Windows 10 so far is usable and compatible with everything Windows 11 is, so it's a good idea to stick with Windows 10.

New to the forum. First post.

I've become a BIG fan of modified/tweaked Win10.
Up until just months ago, I was still a die-hard XP User.

I saw this thread and also a Tiny10 thread and those two piqued my interest to become an Eclipse Member.
I've trial-ran Tiny10 in the past, but it (to me) is quite bloated and resource-hungry!
Also stumbled upon a few ISO threads discussing various versions of Win10.
Many good threads here so I'm looking forward to a 'new home'.

My Daily Driver OS is Win10 2016 LTSB. Heavily modified/tweaked (I use WinReducerEX100).
Runs on 1GB RAM but tend to allocate 2GB RAM.
