I'll kind of respectfully disagree.
Whether it's Meta/Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, Snapchat, Google/YouTube, LinkedIn, X/Twitter, Discord, Twitch, WhatsApp, you name it, it is ALWAYS the responsibility of the end-user to 'jump through' hoops of setting up "profile preferences".
My main concern is since all other message boards I used disable that feature by default for all users there is change users may not realize it is on. It may lead doxxing or other stuff. It is for user security and privacy as well. I see you disabled it from you. If it is not big deal being on by default why bother with it and why not let everyone send you spam

? (just as side note this is joke to prove my point in case anyone though I will actually flood someone with spam)
Eclipse.cx is never going to have a set of "defaults" that appeases all members.
You get them to make a change for "your taste", somebody else pops up with a different request and pulls a "you did it for so-and-so".
I did not say disable it rather turn off feature by default. That means anyone who wishes email communication can enable it. Also I did not say force it for existing user. Rather set it as default for anyone who creates new account to have it disabled by default. I don't like anyone messing with settings of existing users either.
