Hello all, I have a Samsung SyncMaster 740N 17 inch monitor with a resolution of 1280 by 1024, which I am doubtful of whether to keep or sell to buy another monitor. It has no dead pixels, no bad resolution, nothing. I need a monitor to use for my desktop computer, which I will build soon (but idk when exactly, because COVID), but idk what to choose. I will use the desktop for more intensive virtualization, photo editing and audio editing, and possibly some light gaming.

If buying a new monitor, points to note:
  • budget is 100-130 USD
  • Brands I prefer : Samsung, LG, Dell
  • Brands I dislike : Lenovo, HP
  • preferred aspect ratio/resolution: 16:10/1920x1200 or 4:3/1920x1440, but 16:9/1920x1080 should be okay, from what I think

I see no reason why not to keep it.

I got my Dell P2421 with HK$2150 (~277USD) some months ago. for virtualization, photo editing and audio editing, I always think having a bigger display is always better for such applications.

but said as above, you can still keep and use your non-wide monitor for such applications if you want.

Grab a 1920x1080 or 1920x1200, or 1920x1440 display, and use the 1280x1024 monitor as a second display. I used to do that with an old 1440x900 display when my main display was 1080p.

Remote access of other PCs is another task, where you could need a large monitor. Else, your customers surprise you with their "current" resolutions. Using Windows 98 with a 16:9 monitor was a bad desicion I can recall, because with some games, the screen got confused and chose the wrong screen format. And this modern thing didn't support some strange DOS screen resoultions (and frequencies), resulting in the monitor message "Input not supported". The odd 4:3 LCD monitor of 1999 does however, so I will keep it until it breaks!

If you want to brag about your specs, please don't make off topic posts in other threads.
Sorry if I'm being too harsh, I really don't want to be like Dixel Draker.

I won't be connecting to other remote computers.

Yes it is. Why care about monitor size or whatever if it does the job? :P

I once bought a Dell monitor, after I plugged it in, I heard a loud bang, but the monitor still came on, then like a second later, it turned back off.

Back in 2018, I got a 24" S-IPS 1920x1200 HP LP2475w with a March 2013 manufacture date sealed in the box. With it a lightly used VA 1600x1200 HP LP2065. With the monitor arm, I spent like $65 total. God bless that ebay seller lmao.

You can pry 16:10 from my dead, cold fingers 8-)

30" 2560x1600 Ultrasharp or variant of my current monitor is next on my list.
