How the Classic Theme works

OS: Windows 8.1 x64

AFAIK you just can't stop DWM on Windows 8 and above because it will automatically restart. You even get a warning window if you try to kill the process.
So I wonder if suspending it will work fine, that should be checked in a virtual machine
