I don't really think you are missing much if you can't play it in any means.

Mind stating the error? Maybe it's a problem with games using the HL2 source code engine in general...

Probably steam's api is the centre of the trouble, killed a few games quick in a row from running on an old steam.

Looks like Steam on Vista is a no-go then for the games that people actually give a damn about, I guess :/
Also @R3n I thought you swore by Windows 7?

I think I like Vista better tbh. I also like 8.0 quite a lot too.

So do I, I want to use Vista... but the Steam client apparently doesn't work as you've shown. Any workarounds known?

The image I posted was with the October 2020 client, which is pretty modern. Steam won't fully work until we find a way to spoof NT 6.1.
Edit: I see what you mean, the client works, but CS:GO doesn't.

I didn´t ever used Steam because I´m not a gamer, the only games I ever played on a computer were Minesweeper and Pinball, but apparently they cut of support for XP and Vista, even older versions seem to refuse to run. Have you tried it with the extended kernel?

Yeah, the current Steam client doesn't work correctly unless you somehow spoofed everything to look like Windows 7. The last working modded client broke relatively recently it seems as R3n has shown above.

Do I need to use Dependency Walker to show that it's not the client?

I thought you said it was, but alright. I didn't really get the technical reason why it didn't work properly but eh, any further investigation into why would be nice.

Until you try to launch a modern game.

Cities: Skylines cannot launch through Steam on XP x64 since 2017, but it can be launched through "other" methods.
Perhaps CS:GO is in the same boat on Vista.
