Steam on Windows 7/8

The main reason I'm making this thread now instead of later is to stop the rumor that Steam will immediately stop working on 7/8 on January 1st, 2024. We've seen the exact same wording with XP, but you still can (kinda) use the client all these years later. It won't immediately break, it will slowly break.
However, there's more interest in getting these newer versions working. You could pretty easily get 10+ month newer Steam builds basically fully working with some hex mods on XP/Vista, but by the time that was discovered, they were pretty ancient. However now we know where to look, so it's more likely we could mod Windows or the future clients to work relatively quickly. I doubt we'd get the same 10 months due to CEF being so important to the UI, but there's only one way to find out. More likely than not we would either need to make a custom GUI for Steam or kernel extend to fake 10 and make CEF work in the long run.
Just don't say it will immediately stop working. If you find someone thinking that way, please send this post to them. It is technically possible, however, it's not likely going by past events, or even viable to do.

I found a way to run the newest version on steam
use (From
PotionShop's post): -vgui -dev -nofriendsui -no-dwrite -nointro -nobigpicture -nofasthtml -nocrashmonitor -noshaders -no-shared-textures -disablehighdpi -cef-single-process -cef-in-process-gpu -single_core -cef-disable-d3d11 -cef-disable-sandbox -disable-winh264 -no-cef-sandbox -vrdisable -cef-disable-breakpad on "Target:" on a bat file or a shortcut to steam.
Also the Game properties gui menu now works thanks to this.
I'm not sure what options are/aren't needed for steam to run

If someone were to make a custom Steam GUI, it would very nice to see something like the 2010-2014 GUI for Steam. It always looked the best in my opinion, especially the actual library section, and that old Steam logo from that time is just perfection.

New version for 8/1 isn't working with the options anymore.
stick with the last version (7/10)

For anyone having problems with the friends UI then use -nofriendsui

So 16 days after the end of support and there's nothing broken as of yet. The latest January client still works. We got a little further than XP/Vista already.

So latest beta has Chromium 109 now, and it's also for Windows 7 too. They are still doing stuff for Windows 7 after the end of support.

that's so weird. i was expecting them to jump to the latest build of chromium and electron. so are they still semi-officially supporting legacy windows?

I know, why wouldn't they just jump to 120 ??

Update: i tested the newer version of steam and the only thing working: is the main library, download page, friends, popup sidebar and game properties. All of the top options are unclickable and loads into separate windows:

and steam's taskbar doesn't work at all and just loads this:

While the store, community and account pages only shows a black screen

When closing and restarting steam, It's now
only showing the tray icon and downloads in the background after when the account logs in.
Nothing is on screen now
including the 9-18 version on the mega folder
Update: The steam version from 7-16 still shows the GUI (but the older bugs still there)

I've tested:
https://www.patreon.com/posts/steam-2023-dec-95546652
and it mostly works with the newer ui, "Enter chat room" doesn't work and you can't launch games like Deadlock,
but it's fine.
I don't know how different this version is then the mega archives, and why it works better the archive version.
Edit: There's one issue with "steamwebhelper" having a memory leak, as the main "steamwebhelper" uses 12GB of ram.

Same, reported to steam but after telling me to troubleshot for while then i got:
Before we try to troubleshoot further, our recommendation would be to upgrade your operating system to continue the service.
Some games can install or update fine, but other games can't be installed or updated.
And got
Negotiated HTTP/2 but fixes like this doesn't work:
https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/16e1l4h/slow_steam_downloads_try_this/
the main errors i get is
Unpack failed or
Marking bad download source cache*-ord1.steamcontent.com, 1 jobs

Make sure your steam client is up to date. The issue with corrupt update is due to the use of new file compression ZSTD format by Steam to further reduce usage of storage space on their servers and save money. They started rolling out the new compression on games in May and will eventually reach all games.
and:
https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/11/4349988612573450321/?l=koreana&ctp=598
seems that there is a codec you can download to make ZSTD compression work in windows 7. i have not tested it myself.
DepotDownloader can download and decompress, it just awkward to use.
The issue is with old Steam Client what you can not fix with anything.

I am currently using
SteamCMD https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamCMD with
-overrideminos parameter.
For example, If I want to download Half-Life 2 (Steam Application ID 220):
- I open command line (Win+R cmd)
- then I navigate to SteamCMD install directory using cd command,
- type SteamCMD -overrideminos,
- set up install directory using force_install_dir <directory> command (for some reason it has to be set up before signing in),
- then I sign in with login <username> <password>,
- and type app_update 220,
- then I move files to correct steamapps folder (I found it to be less messy to download them somewhere else first)
- and finally click install in Steam client that proceeds to validate the files.
