Steam for Windows 7 and 8 (2024-11-08)
I was recently pointed to a version of Steam that works on stock WIndows 7 that is newer than the official 2023 EOS version, or the previously known 2024-09-18 beta. This client is dated 2024-11-08 (or 07 in some timezones even though the date looks like it should be static) and seems to be a beta of some sort for Windows 7. So I obtained it and archived it.
Outside of our Steam archive, the only other version I could find searching online is the client from 2023 and I don't want another XP situation where the 2019-01-04 client was just gone for a while, and the latest that could be found online was the 2018-11-26 client.
Here's the link to the client with instructions on how to install and use it.

Yeah I asked lappo that question here: https://board.eclipse.cx/viewtopic.php?t=831
I keep my XP very VERY slim but I also don't do much and some games lose me because my attention span sucks nowadays. Some days all I can play is my lame racing car games.
We haven't chatted in a while - how are you doing? I sort of miss you but I realize you are VERY busy. I just don't give up on my friends easily and you are one of them

Ok, take good care

I was about to say idk how to get a version like that, but then I remembered the manifest file exists. According to the manifest, it is equal to 1730853000.

I also looked at the embed (I have those blocked) and idk how to get the raw link from it so I wrapped it in a URL tag.

Well, I took a screenshot for the listing and I don't see that number anywhere on it.

By the looks of things, just judging from the context of your EOL message, mine implies a time where it was serviced, and yours that it never was. Even though the number you pulled was the same, I'm inclined to believe your version is newer. If that matters at all, I have no idea.

I wonder what happens if you move this into your Steam folder and rename the package folder.

Also they look to be the same version going by date. The date is weirdly dependent on the timezone which is just plain wrong when paired with the UTC -08:00 bit.
If you convert your client's time to 24hr or mine to 12hr, you'll find that I'm 1hr behind so your client's date shows as being 1hr newer.

What's the purpose? Reading it, all it does is disable updates, no?K4sum1 wrote: ↑16 May 2025, 19:38 I wonder what happens if you move this into your Steam folder and rename the package folder.

Well yeah, but I want to see if it affects the EOS message or the Steam version number.

When you say package folder, are you referring to renaming the Steam root folder or the CFG file?

The package folder is (Program FIles)\Steam\package

Anything really. or you could move it or delete it even idk. Just change it so Steam doesn't see it. I usually just rename it to package1 in testing.

No effect on EOL message, still Stable Client instead of your Beta build, although the version number changes to local instead of 1730853000.

It's also possible the message could be affected by being updated to or a fresh install.
Although we should be running the client with -pretendeol-w10 to bypass the message entirely.
Actually lemme add that to the archive.org listing.
